Stationary Fuel Cell Market Will Reach $9 Billion in Annual Revenue by 2022

Stationary-Fuel-CellsWhile growing in terms of megawatts and systems shipped, the market for stationary fuel cells is also going through a period of deep restructuring, with a number of companies exiting the space and a handful of new entrants appearing.  Over the last year, the sector has seen a sharp increase in market demand created by government policy initiatives.  According to a recent report from Navigant Research, annual revenue from stationary fuel cells will grow from $1.7 billion in 2013 to $9 billion in 2022.

“Stationary fuel cells are still in the early part of the adoption cycle, with limited availability and affordability,” says Kerry-Ann Adamson, research director with Navigant Research.  “During the last year, however, companies have moved to create products for markets where real needs exist—in many cases producing systems that use locally available fuels, can be maintained by local engineers, and do not require very limited operating temperature ranges.  This growing realism will enable the industry to create a secure foundation for future growth.” Continue reading

Consumer Support for Clean Energy Held Steady in 2012

energy-efficient-house-mediumBOULDER, Colo.–()–After facing several challenges in 2012, including the demise of some high-profile solar energy firms, continued political inaction on climate change and energy policy, and concerns around smart grids/smart meters and consumer privacy, the U.S. clean energy industry is seeking to rebound in 2013. According to a new white paper from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, after declining sharply from 2009 to 2011, consumer support for clean energy concepts has essentially stabilized. The survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults conducted in the fall of 2012 found that the average percentage of consumers with a “very favorable” or “favorable” view of 13 clean energy concepts stands at 42 percent. Hydrogen Fuel Cells Will Be a Modest $3 Billion Market in 2030

US-beefs-up-fuel-cell-research-and-development-with-74-million_295x220BOSTON–()–The dream of a hydrogen economy envisioned for decades by politicians, economists, and environmentalists is no nearer, with hydrogen fuel cells turning a modest $3 billion market of about 5.9 GW in 2030, says Lux Research.

Although the cost of hydrogen impacts fuel cell market adoption, hydrogen fuel accounts for only 35% of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for stationary applications and 21% of the TCO for mobile applications, with fuel cell capital costs and membrane replacement costs making up most of the difference. Annual Fuel Cell System Shipments Will Surpass 600K by 2017

Fuel cells have an important role to play within the emerging smart energy paradigm.  They represent one of a wave of commercially available technologies that are resilient, distributed, and efficient.  Though the fuel cell industry has displayed some encouraging signs in the last three years, it still faces significant headwinds – including the high costs for fuel cell stacks compared those of incumbent technologies and a lack of customer awareness of the advantages of fuel cell technology.  Nevertheless, according to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, annual shipments of fuel cell systems will grow rapidly over the next 5 years, from less than 29,000 in 2012 to more than 600,000 in 2017.

The market value of the fuel cell industry, including all applications in the stationary, portable, and transport sectors, will reach $15.7 billion in 2017, the study concludes. Continue reading

More than 75,000 Electric Drive Buses Will Be on Roads Worldwide by 2018

No other category of heavy duty vehicles has seen more adoption of electric drivetrains than buses.  In North America, hybrid models have captured as much as 40 percent of new transit bus purchases in recent years.  Electric drivetrains – whether for hybrid systems, battery electric, or fuel cell – hold appeal for the bus market for many of the same reasons they do for light duty vehicles: the promise of moving away from oil, efficiency gains, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and, in many cases, lower operating costs.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the global market for electric drive buses is expected to grow steadily over the next six years, with a compound annual growth rate of 26 percent from 2012 to 2018.  By 2018, the report concludes, more than 75,000 electric drivetrain buses will be in service around the world. Semprius to Exhibit New Solar Technology at 2012 Democratic National Convention

DURHAM, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Semprius, Inc., an innovator in high concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) solar modules, will display a new branding application for its world record technology at Duke Energy’s exhibit in the Legacy Village at CarolinaFest, which runs in conjunction with the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Semprius, the world record holder for photovoltaic module conversion efficiency and the first company to covert over one-third of the sun’s energy into electricity, has developed a new solar module with unique branding potential. Semprius’ technology begins with its proprietary micro-transfer printing process, enabling the company to use the world’s smallest solar cell – approximately the size of a pencil point – to manufacture modules with unmatched performance and cost advantages. In addition to supporting large-scale power generation projects, Semprius also possesses the exclusive ability to incorporate graphics into its modules. Semprius’ new “Marquee” design will be demonstrated at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, installed by Charlotte-based Argand Energy Solutions, highlighting the ability to incorporate corporate logos into Semprius solar arrays of any size. New Clean Vehicle Fuel Standards Will Grow Jobs and Clean up Our Environment

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture) welcomed the new clean vehicle standards announced by the Obama administration today. The new standards, which will take effect in two stages, will nearly double the average fuel efficiency – reaching 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates the rules will save 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, or about 23 billion gallons of gasoline annually by 2030, and trim global warming carbon dioxide emissions by 280 million tons.

“These new standards will grow jobs, protect the public health, clean up our environment, and make our nation more secure,” said George Jugovic Jr., PennFuture’s president and CEO. “These standards will also help put the brakes on rising gas prices by cutting the cost of gas by $1 a gallon by the year 2025.

“This plan will reduce unhealthy air pollution, improve public health and help curb climate change,” said Jugovic. “These new standards will also spur technology and innovation, making the U.S. a leader in fuel efficiency. Continue reading
