Columbia-PepsiCo Collaboration Creates Powerful Software Tool for Carbon Footprinting

(3BL Media) Researchers at Columbia University, working in collaboration with PepsiCo, have developed new software that can rapidly calculate the carbon footprints of thousands of products simultaneously.

The methodology could greatly reduce the time and expense associated with carbon footprinting, helping companies accurately label products and design ways to reduce their environmental impacts.

Up until now, life cycle analysis has mostly been performed one product at a time. This imposes large requirements for personnel, expertise, and time, and few companies have enough employees with specialized expertise.

new study, published online in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, describes how researchers used a life cycle analysis database covering 1,137 PepsiCo products and created three interconnected techniques that enable the calculations of thousands of footprints within minutes, while eliminating manual mapping of a product’s ingredients and packaging materials.

Better World Club to Provide Carbon-Neutral Roadside Assistance

(3BL Media) Portland, OR – September 4, 2012- Better World Club, the nation’s only environmentally-friendly auto club, announced today that it would provide the nation’s first carbon neutral roadside assistance.  As part of its mission to promote social and environmental responsibility, Better World Club will estimate the tons of CO2produced each year by trucks providing services to its members, and purchase the equivalent in US-based carbon offsets.

President Mitch Rofsky explains, “Whether your business involves manufacturing, fracking, or just driving, American companies need to assume responsibility for zero environmental impact.  While carbon offsets aren’t the final answer to climate change, they’re a crucial step to minimize greenhouse gases. We hope other auto clubs will follow us, so that all of America’s roadside assistance can be carbon neutral.” Continue reading

New Clean Vehicle Fuel Standards Will Grow Jobs and Clean up Our Environment

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture) welcomed the new clean vehicle standards announced by the Obama administration today. The new standards, which will take effect in two stages, will nearly double the average fuel efficiency – reaching 54.5 mpg for cars and light-duty trucks by Model Year 2025. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates the rules will save 1.5 million barrels of oil a day, or about 23 billion gallons of gasoline annually by 2030, and trim global warming carbon dioxide emissions by 280 million tons.

“These new standards will grow jobs, protect the public health, clean up our environment, and make our nation more secure,” said George Jugovic Jr., PennFuture’s president and CEO. “These standards will also help put the brakes on rising gas prices by cutting the cost of gas by $1 a gallon by the year 2025.

“This plan will reduce unhealthy air pollution, improve public health and help curb climate change,” said Jugovic. “These new standards will also spur technology and innovation, making the U.S. a leader in fuel efficiency. Continue reading

IKEA Plugs-in Solar Panels at Dallas-Area Store

FRISCO, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its Dallas-area store in Frisco, Texas – which, when combined with projects completed in Houston and underway in Round Rock, make IKEA the state’s largest private solar owner. IKEA Frisco’s 114,000-square-foot photovoltaic (PV) array consists of a 912-kW system, built with 3,780 panels, and will produce approximately 1,336,300 kWh of clean electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing 1,016 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), eliminating the emissions of 181 cars or powering 115 homes yearly (calculating clean energy equivalents at www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html).

“We are thrilled at how this solar energy system furthers our commitment to sustainability at IKEA Frisco”

This installation represents the 30th completed solar project for IKEA in the U.S., with 9 more locations underway, making the eventual U.S. solar presence of IKEA nearly 89% with a total generation of 38 MW. IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings – as opposed to a solar lease or PPA (power purchase agreement) – and globally has allocated €590 million to invest in renewable energy, focusing on solar and wind during the coming three years. This investment reinforces the long-term commitment of IKEA to sustainability and confidence in photovoltaic (PV) technology. More than 250,000 solar panels have been installed on IKEA stores and buildings across the world. The company also owns and/or operates approximately 110 wind turbines in Europe. Continue reading

Oil Companies Failing to Inform Investors of Climate Change Risks

(3BL Media) Boston – August 2, 2012 Deepwater oil drilling in all corners of the world. Hydraulic fracturing for gas and oil across the U.S. Proliferating oil sands production in Canada.

A new and more risk-laden energy future is taking shape as the global thirst for fossil fuels spurs a search on frontiers once beyond technology’s reach. The environmental risks from extracting and transporting these fuels are numerous – with the 2010 Gulf of Mexico deepwater oil spill just one example of how things can go wrong. Climate change risks, including climate-driven physical impacts and regulations to control carbon emissions, also create financial exposure for oil and gas companies.

Yet gigantic flows of investment money are being directed into these efforts. Continue reading

Hilton Worldwide’s UK Hotels Awarded Carbon Saver Gold Standard

(3BL Media) London, UK – August 3, 2012 - Hilton Worldwide has been awarded the highly acclaimed Carbon Saver Gold Standard for effective carbon reduction and management at all of its UK hotels, where carbon emissions have been reduced over a three year period. Sustainability is a critical performance measure of the business, just like quality, service, and revenue. Hilton Worldwide is the first major multi-brand hospitality company in the industry to make this commitment.

At the heart of the company’s success is the utilization of the proprietary sustainability measurement system  LightStay, which analyzes performance across 200 operational practices, such as housekeeping, paper product usage, food waste, chemical storage, air quality, and transportation, and is used to improve sustainability performance on a continuous basis. A unique aspect of Lightstay is the ‘meeting impact calculator’, a feature that calculates the environmental impact of any meeting or conference held at a property.

The Carbon Saver Standard provides external verification of Hilton Worldwide’s efforts to measure, manage and minimise its carbon emissions. To achieve this, Hilton Worldwide had to show three years’ worth of energy reductions and provide evidence of sustainability strategies being undertaken within its UK properties. Continue reading
