Has your organization had its Annual Sustainability Audit? If not, now is the time.

Memphis, Tennessee – November, 14 2013 – The end of the year is the perfect time to conduct your organization’s annual sustainability audit.   Whether its the first time or already an ingrained tradition, the end of the year is a great time to reflect on accomplishments of the year and the goals for the future.

Why a Sustainability Audit?

A sustainability audit is a powerful tool.  A sustainability audit takes an inventory of all of the policies, procedures and practices of an organization and compares these to the best practices in their industry.  In essence, an audit is a gap analysis and a maturity analysis of the sustainability practices of an organization. It is meant to document ‘what you are doing’ and ‘to what extent’ across a wide range of sustainability categories. Continue reading

3 Companies that Are Making Money by Embracing Sustainability

(Source – 3BLMedia) By Alex Perera, Co-director, Business Engagement in Climate and Technology, WRI

Superstorm Sandy and the subsequent Nor’easter were the biggest news this week and last. The combination of two powerful forces resulted in unprecedented and widespread damage. Our thoughts are with those who have been impacted.

I can’t help but draw the connection between our recent extreme weather and businesses today—corporations are increasingly recognizing that they, too, are navigating two powerful forces. One force demands financial results, while the other requires increasingly sophisticated techniques to respond to climate, energy, resource scarcity, and other sustainability risks. The ways businesses navigate both these forces will determine whether they are truly viable over the long-term. Continue reading

GlobalGiving E-Gift Cards: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

(3BLMedia) Naveen Kumar was first inspired to volunteer in his college years during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake in India. Two years later, his volunteer spirit was reignited while, as an employee of HP, he was taking information and communications technology (ICT) into rural communities in India. When a woman confronted him with the question, “How can computers give me food?” he determined to help her and her family to solve their problem of accessing the food ration cards for which they qualified; he did this online. Seeing the needs around him, Kumar also determined to engage himself and his coworkers in volunteer service.

How does a company recognize employees who volunteer to help others? HP, for one, gives $50 GlobalGiving gift cards in recognition of employees who record 10 or more hours of volunteer time per quarter. According to Gabi Zedlmayer, vice president of sustainability and social innovation at HP, “the redemption rates are incredibly high and employees around the world really enjoy continuing to give back to causes they care about. This process creates a virtuous circle of giving.” Continue reading

NAPERVILLE, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A U.S. wind turbine manufacturer has selected Broadwind Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: BWEN) to supply approximately $14 million of wind towers for delivery in 2013. This order includes an option to purchase up to $27 million of additional towers which would have to be exercised in early 2013. Peter C. Duprey, president and CEO of Broadwind Energy, Inc., stated, “We are very pleased that Broadwind’s improved competitive position has led to new wind tower business, particularly given the regulatory uncertainty around the extension of the production tax credit. Assuming the option is exercised, orders for 2013 deliveries will exceed the low end of the production range guidance we previously provided. With wind tower supply and demand coming into better balance and the ongoing trade case, we have seen continued market share gains, and are increasingly optimistic about the outlook for the tower business in 2013.” Continue reading
