BrightFarms to Build the World’s Largest Urban Greenhouse for Giant Food Stores

(3BL Media/Justmeans) – Giant Food Stores has inked a deal with BrightFarms, a pioneer in constructing greenhouses attached to supermarkets, to build the world’s largest urban greenhouse. The greenhouse will extend over an area of 100,000 square feet. It will deliver nearly one million pounds of fresh produce a year to about 30 Giant supermarkets in the Washington, D.C., metro area.

BrightFarms specializes in building as well as operating greenhouses, and expects the new greenhouse to open this fall. In addition to providing produce through the greenhouse, the company plans to open this massive facility to schools as an educational tool on urban agriculture and sustainability.

Summer is my favorite time of year at Darden because I have the opportunity to work on a rewarding project that engages our restaurants and celebrates our leaders. As a media and communications manager for Darden, part of my role involves telling stories about our restaurant brands. The best stories are often the ones told through our people – the men and women who operate one of our 2,100 restaurants or lead teams comprised of our more than 200,000 employees. They are also the ones I treasure the most because they bring to life why our company is a great place to work and why Darden is the only restaurant company to be named one of Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Keep America Beautiful, Alcoa Foundation Team Up with State and County Fairs to Launch Major Recycling Initiative

STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 1, 2013 /3BL Media/ – When the 2013 Indiana State Fair and county fairs in Virginia and Washington open in August, fairgoers and vendors will be introduced to a brand new recycling initiative. The Indiana State Fair Commission (Aug. 2-18), the Arlington County Fair (Aug. 7-11) in Virginia and the Kitsap County Fair and Stampede (Aug. 21 -25) in Washington has partnered with Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and Alcoa Foundation to increase waste reduction, recycling and composting through the strategic placement of recycling bins across their respective fairgrounds.

The three fairs have been selected to receive grant funding from Alcoa Foundation to fund additional recycling bins, technical and communications tools, support and training, and the identification of cost-effective practices, all managed by national nonprofit KAB. Keep America Beautiful is also partnering with local groups at each fair to provide an accompanying educational booth, designed to raise awareness about the environmental and economic impact of recycling. Green Hotels on BookDifferent – Over a thousand accommodations with an eco-label

logo_diapAmsterdam, 14th January, 2013 – As of 2013, hotel booking site BookDifferent.com shows which of the more than 245.00 accommodations on their site are sustainable. BookDifferent is the first hotel booking site that indicates hotels with an eco-label, among accommodations without such a label. Someone looking for a green hotel is no longer dependent on specialized sites.

BookDifferent works together with two international eco-labels focusing on the leisure and tourism industry: Green Key and Green Globe.  On the BookDifferent site a total of 1015 hotels in 62 countries have been awarded one or both eco-labels. Continue reading
