Burger King Commits to going Cage and Crate-Free

Burger King, the world’s second largest fast food chain, signaled bold change this week when it announced it will source 100 percent of its eggs and pork from cage-free chickens and crate-free pigs by 2017. The company, which purchases hundreds of millions of eggs and millions of pounds of pork annually, currently sources just nine percent of eggs and 20 percent of pork from cage-free vendors. Burger King joins a number of other brands making cage-free egg purchasing decisions, but according to Matthew Prescott, a spokesperson for the Humane Society of the United States, this is the first time a major chain has made a commitment of this caliber. New TCO Criteria for IT Offers 3rd Party Verification of Responsible Production

STOCKHOLM, April 1, 2012 /3BL Media / PRNewswire/ – TCO Certified, the international third party sustainability certification for IT products, now requires independent verification of ethical working conditions among electronics manufacturers applying for product certification. In light of recent reports of deficient working conditions at electronics manufacturing plants, the launch of new tightened social responsibility requirements offers the industry an effective and credible way to improve and verify their progress towards more ethical production practices.

Niclas Rydell, Manager for Certification and Development at TCO Development, believes now could be a turning point for the industry as a whole: “From TCO Development’s perspective, we know that professional IT buyers are placing greater demand on their vendors to ensure that products they buy are made in an ethically responsible way. The recent reports of inadequate working conditions, salaries and worker health & safety at Apple supplier Foxconn in China, are no doubt concerning. However we believe the situation is indicative of an industry-wide problem — one where there is a greater need for independent systems that can verify a company’s actions and progress towards key labor conventions established by the ILO. This is what TCO Certified is designed to do. We also welcome the important steps now being taken by FLA and Apple to move their production in a more socially responsible direction.” Continue reading

Whole Foods Market® to stop selling red-rated seafood

Becomes first national grocer to eliminate red-rated, wild-caught species from fish counters, meets seafood sustainability goal one year early ‘Fishmonger Face-Off’ contest to highlight team members’ skill and knowledge while educating shoppers on responsibly caught seafood

NEW YORK (March 30, 2012) – Beginning this Earth Day (April 22), Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM) will no longer carry red-rated wild-caught fish in its seafood departments. The move, which comes one year ahead of the company’s self-imposed deadline of Earth Day 2013, makes Whole Foods Market the first national grocer to stop selling red-rated seafood.

A red rating indicates that a species is suffering from overfishing or that current fishing methods harm other marine life or habitats; the ratings are determined by nonprofit research organizations Blue Ocean Institute and Monterey Bay Aquarium. Continue reading

WTO Case Against China Step One, Says Industry Group

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The U.S. Magnetic Materials Association applauds President Obama’s recent decision to pursue a complaint against the People’s Republic of China in the World Trade Organization. For decades, China has pursued a series of anti-competitive practices in rare earth mining and processing, causing devastating effects for the U.S. rare earth industry. The WTO complaint will be a welcome relief to these businesses. However, business and political leaders alike should realize that WTO action can only be a single step in the rebuilding of a strong and sustainable rare earth market. As a result, USMMA and the small businesses it represents are already reaching out to the administration and to Congress in order to support the complaint but also to ensure that momentum continues building on other initiatives in the rare earth sector.

A WTO ruling against China will be a powerful blow to a monopoly thirty years in the making. It will strike down China’s harsh export and production quotas, which have been manipulated for political and economic gain in the past. It will force Chinese companies to compete on equal footing with companies around the world, rather than serving as a powerful incentive for those businesses to outsource jobs and technology to China. And it will show strong support for a newly re-emergent manufacturing sector in the United States. Continue reading
