North America to Become the Largest Market for Carbon Management Software and Services by 2013

Greenstone Carbon Management System

Under pressure from regulatory bodies, shareholders, and consumers, companies worldwide are being driven to become more energy efficient.  The logical focal point of these corporate efforts is carbon management, presenting a large and growing market opportunity for providers of software and services in this area.  While governmental efforts to limit emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are much more active and visible in Western Europe than in the United States, the business reality is that North American organizations are undertaking serious and far-reaching initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, the market for carbon management software and services in North America will become the largest in the world in 2013, reaching just over $1.1 billion, or 41% of the global market.

In 2017, the cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts, total worldwide spending on carbon management software and services will be $5.7 billion.  North America will represent 43% of that. Continue reading

New Greenhouse Gas Standards Unveiled for Corporate Value Chain and Products

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol launched two new standards today that will empower businesses to better measure, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions. Developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) and Product Life Cycle Standards will enable companies to save money, reduce risks, and gain competitive advantages.

“These standards are a breakthrough for business. For the first time, companies will be able to measure and manage the full scope of emissions in their value chain and products, so they can take advantage of new opportunities as they reduce greenhouse gases,” said Manish Bapna, Interim President, WRI. “Backed by the credibility of the GHG Protocol, the new standards will help move businesses and reporting programs to one harmonized global reporting framework.” Continue reading

Dolphin Blue Becomes a Certified B Corporation

Dolphin Blue, Inc., an online retailer of green office supplies, all made in the USA, is proud to announce its certification as a B CorporationTM. The announcement follows nearly 20 years of green retail experience in providing consumers with post-consumer recycled products.

Certified B Corporations use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.  All companies obtaining a B Corp certification must pass a rigorous assessment by the non-profit B Lab group to determine the organizational impact on stakeholders. Currently, there are only eight B Corps in Texas, and Dolphin Blue is one of two in the DFW metroplex. Continue reading

CSR QuickStart and Caelus CurrentState – The Perfect Sustainability Combination for Business

As the Managing Director of a sustainability consulting company and the main contributor of our company blog, I search the the internet daily for the latest and most relevant sustainability news items.  Not only am I looking for major events (such as a major corporation announcing new green initiatives or the creation of new international standards and agreements), but I also keep a keen eye on the sustainability consulting industry.

This morning I came across a press release for a new product and co-marketing partnership that really has me excited.  The product is CSR QuickStart (Gaia Metrics) and the partnership is with the CSRwire.  Thet describe the product in the following way:

By automating the process of collecting relevant CSR Report data, CSR QuickStart™ reduces the time to do so from months to just days, and cuts typical costs by 90 percent or more.

The reason for my excitement is because I have been waiting for a company to do this for the past 5 years.  In my humble opinion, sustainability doesn’t have to be hard.  In fact, it is really the exercise of very simple things – the only problem is that there are a lot of things, and many organizations are not sure where to begin.
