Recycle for the Future: Coca-Cola Enterprises Seeks to Transform At-Home Recycling

LONDON, May 20, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE/Euronext Paris: CCE), which manufactures, bottles and markets Coca-Cola products in Western Europe, has begun a ground-breaking study with 20 households in Great Britain and France to observe at-home recycling behaviors. The study will seek to understand why recycling rates are so low, despite people expressing strong beliefs towards environmental behaviors.

Research shows that 75% of French and 76% of British consumers claim to “always” recycle plastic bottles at home, and over 63% across both countries view recycling as “a moral and environmental duty.” However, actual at-home recycling rates do not reflect these intentions with only half of all plastic bottles currently collected for recycling, revealing a significant ‘value/action gap.’ Improving these recycling rates will enable manufacturers to boost sources of locally-available high-quality recycled PET and reduce their resource footprint. The Green Can Inc. is a recycling initiative to allow the easy and convenient recycling of aluminum cans.

The thought here is that people when given a readily available choice to recycle they will indeed do the right thing. The obvious first choice for placement is any high density residential community. There is no form of recycling offered at 95% of apartment communities. The very few who do offer it do so at a huge expense to the property. Currently only homeowners are provided easy access to recycling. Continue reading

Regulations and Certifications Cause Increases in Recycling and Reuse of Scrap Electronics

Discarded electronic equipment that is not recycled, reused, or stored becomes e-waste and is buried, incinerated, or dumped, representing a significant environmental hazard.  Today, most unwanted e-waste is still disposed of in landfills rather than being directed toward reuse or recycling, and the total volume of discarded electronics and e-waste in landfills will continue increasing over the next several years.  New laws and regulations, along with advances in industry certification of processors of electronic scrap, however, will slow the dumping of e-waste in coming years.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, these developments will combine to produce strong progress in the electronics recycling movement through 2025.

Between 2010 and 2025, the cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts, the percentage of total e-scrap that is recycled will grow from 18% in 2010 to 54% in 2025.  Electronics recycling and reuse will rise from 122 million cubic feet (and 1.1 million tons) per year in 2010 to 789 million cubic feet (and 7.9 million tons) annually by 2025. TUALATIN, Ore., Jul 05, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Pacific Natural Foods has received the Association of Oregon Recyclers’ (AOR) 2012 Leadership in Sustainable Practices Award. Not given annually, the award is reserved to celebrate organizations that find solutions to materials management issues and far exceed sustainability performance of similar establishments.

“Pacific’s perseverance, innovation and leadership in developing a solution to the problem of waste product and packaging is inspiring,” said David Allaway of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, who nominated the company. Jesse Engum, chair of the AOR awards committee, added, “They didn’t stop at food donations and recycling. Pacific is continually looking for ways to improve, and we hope other organizations learn from their example.” Continue reading
