Smart Grid Deployments are Driving a Revolution in Utility Customer Information Systems

Image from http://www.smartgrid.epri.com/.

The electric utility industry is engaged in a massive buildout of smart grid infrastructure, but the full benefits of this investment will only be realized if there is a similar transformation in customer engagement.  Many utilities have realized that they need to dramatically change the way the way they view and manage customer relationships.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the deployment of smart meters is the key driving force in this revolution, enabling new consumer services and providing new insight into customer behavior.

As a result, the study concludes, the electric utility billing and customer information systems (CIS) software and services market will nearly double in the next 5 years, growing from $2.3 billion in 2011 to $4.0 billion by 2017.

“Large U.S. investor-owned utilities looking to develop new revenue streams, European energy retailers working in a deregulated market, and utilities in the developing world seeking to improve revenue collection and energy auditing are all taking a new look at their requirements for billing and CIS,” says research director Eric Woods.  “This shift requires utilities to master the product development, marketing, and customer relationship skills to ensure competitive success.  In turn, the billing and CIS systems underpinning these business processes will have to step up to the challenge.” Continue reading

FedEx Express Breaks Ground On Solar At Newark International Airport

(3BLMedia) FedEx Express will break ground today on a huge new solar array at its facilities by Newark Liberty International Airport.

“It’s about finding diverse sources of energy as we seek to operate more efficiently,” said Mitch Jackson, the company’s vice president of environmental affairs, in an interview yesterday.

Jackson said the project, which will cover 3.5 acres of buildings at the airport, will supply 15 percent of the facility’s power needs at a lower cost than the energy currently provided from the grid.

“What we look at for each of these systems is almost a triple bottom line: lower cost, a lower environmental footprint and a sustainable model with respect to diversification of supply,” Jackson said. Continue reading

Smart Building Managed Services Spending to Surpass $1 Billion by 2020

As part of the effort to cut costs in the global recession, many commercial building owners and managers have installed building energy management systems (BEMS) to reduce energy use and operating expenses.  While these new systems can provide significant efficiency gains, their sophistication can be beyond the capabilities and resource levels of a building’s operating or maintenance staff.  Consequently, smart building managed services are growing in demand and popularity as a means of solving these and other building energy management market issues.

According to a new report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, worldwide spending on these outsourced services – which include data acquisition and analytics, as well as building maintenance contracts – will grow from $291 million in 2012 to $1.1 billion by 2020. London Olympic Park Environmental Cleanup Uses Innovative Technologies

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The July 17 opening of London’s £7-billion 2012 Olympic Park, with its 16 new major stadia and other sports facilities, also marks the successful conclusion of one of the world’s largest brownfield regeneration projects in recent years. This olympic-sized cleanup included the remediation and redevelopment of more than 200 hectares (500 acres) of former industrial land where previous uses such as chemical and fertilizer works, landfills and depots had left a legacy of severe soil and groundwater contamination.

Among the new facilities, the Zaha Hadid-designed London Aquatics Centre (LAC) is one of the most conspicuous, being one of most prominent of the “green” buildings in the new complex as well as the first structure most visitors will see as they approach the Olympic Park. As a brownfield redevelopment project, the Aquatics Centre also presented a significant remediation challenge, being located on a former industrial site and contaminated with lubricating oil, a difficult-to-remove light, non-aqueous phase liquid or LNAPL. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) set strict deadlines for all Olympic facility construction projects, and the subsurface foundations for the LAC were to be completed by July 27, 2009, exactly three years before opening day.
