ConAgra Foods Program Saves Nearly 300 Million Gallons of Water, Eliminates 61,000 Tons of Waste, and Reduces Carbon Emissions

(3BL Media) Omaha, NE – April 11, 2012 – ConAgra Foods, Inc., (NYSE: CAG) announced today the winners of its 2012 Sustainable Development Awards, an internal awards program intended to drive and reward innovative approaches to sustainability that produce tangible business results. The more than 100 entries collectively:

  • reduced carbon emissions by more than 43,600 metric tonnes;
  • eliminated 61,000 tons of landfill waste and 4,800 tons of packaging material;
  • and conserved 295 million gallons of water.

Additionally, the projects delivered more than $28 million in savings, demonstrating the economic value of the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

ConAgra Foods started the Sustainable Development Awards in 1992 to encourage and incentivize employees to proactively look for ways to eliminate waste, reduce energy and conserve water through smart design. Xylem opens new distribution and customer service base in Moscow

Leading global water and energy-efficient solutions provider expands capabilities in fast-growing Russian market

MOSCOW–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Xylem Inc. Barrie, Ontario to Save Millions with Investment in Sensus Smart Grid for Water Technology

Projected windfall of $20 million over 20 years through wireless communications

RALEIGH, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The City of Barrie, Ontario is saving $600,000 to $1 million annually since launching its smart grid for water project which involved installing theSensus FlexNet™ fixed-base wireless communications system and equipping all of its 42,000 residential water meters and 2,500 commercial and industrial water meters with radio transmitters.

A University of North Carolina Dorm’s Green Overhaul to Save University $81k

Excitement grows as UNC Asheville’s solar hot water installation approaches

ASHEVILLE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The University of North Carolina – Asheville plans to cut annual hot water costs in Mills Residence Hall by 29% through the installation of a solar energy system from SolTherm. Compared to their previous energy source, the student dormitory is expected to save more than $81,000 over the life of the system.

“But the UNC – Asheville facility management team was determined in their sustainability efforts and as a UNCA Alumni, I am thrilled to see the project come to fruition.”

The dormitory, which uses an average of 6,000 gallons of hot water per day, was an ideal facility for a solar thermal water heating system. The system will consist of 64 collector panels which receive the sun’s energy and transfer it to heat the dormitory’s water supply. The water is stored in an insulated tank and is used throughout the day for laundry and showering, allowing hot water to be accessed even when the sun is not shining. Continue reading
