Investment in Green Telecom Could Reduce Greenhouse Gases

Investment in Green Telecom Networks Could Reduce Worldwide Emissions of Greenhouse Gases from Network Operations by 32 Percent between 2011 and 2016

Telecommunications network operators are faced with the challenge of balancing their growing subscriber bases and rising mobile data usage with their public pledges to reduce both capital and operating expenditures, along with emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs).  As such, robust alternative energy solutions to power fixed and mobile networks are increasingly important.  The goal of creating more efficient and sustainable networks is a top priority for nearly every telecom service provider today.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, investment in energy-efficient telecom network infrastructure will reach $194 billion annually by 2016.

All told, these investments could reduce GHG emissions from the telecom industry by 32 percent by 2016 compared to a business-as-usual scenario, the study concludes. Continue reading

Apple’s North Carolina Data Center to Use 100% Renewable Energy

“By the end of 2012, we’ll meet the energy needs of our Maiden, North Carolina, data center using entirely renewable sources. To achieve this, we’re building our own facilities that will provide over 60 percent of the clean power we need. It’s another example of Apple’s commitment to designing for energy efficiency — from the ground up.” Source: Apple.com

Generating onsite renewable energy

Apple’s data center in Maiden, North Carolina, will draw about 20 megawatts of power at full capacity. We’ll be producing an unprecedented 60 percent of this power onsite. To do that, we’re building what will be the nation’s largest private solar arrays and the largest non-utility fuel cell installation operating anywhere in the country. That’s a scale of onsite renewable energy production that no other company has matched. Onsite energy generation minimizes our dependence on the grid and reduces our environmental impact. And when our solar arrays and fuel cells are operating, Apple’s Maiden data center will be the most environmentally sound data center ever built.

DVL Pledges To Assist 12 Data Centers Achieve LEED Certification

BRISTOL, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–DVL Group, a provider of data center power, cooling and infrastructure management solutions, has pledged to assist 12 data centers achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification and save 1,000,000 watts of electrical energy. Three companies that save the most watts will receive the Less WattsAward and DVL will donate $1,000 to the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) in each company’s name.

DVGBC is a chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which set the standards for LEED building. DVL will work with each company to achieve LEED Certification, administered by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED Certification verifies that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Facilities and IT personnel interested in making their data centers more efficient by participating in the Less Watts competition should attend DVL’s “Are You Prepared For What’s Next?” event at their Bristol, PA facility. The free conference takes place on May 9 and 10, offering the same seminars each day. All courses will feature IACET-authorized CEUs. How to Green your Computer

The production of computers is energy and material intensive, it creates significant amounts of waste, and uses many toxic materials. Therefore it is critical to purchase, use and dispose of computers in the most sustainable manner possible.

The following in an excerpt from the book “The Ultimate Guide to Greening your Home”.

Below are some tips to help you green your computer usage.

✔ Turn on your energy management features - All computers, regardless of the operating system, come with energy management features. Be sure these setting put your computer in ‘hibernate’ or ‘deep sleep’ mode after a certain period of inactivity.

✔ Turn off your screen saver - While helping save your screen, screen savers do not save electricity.  Depending on the complexity of the screen saver, the screen saver may be using as much processing power as when you are using your computer to run programs. Opt to have your computer go into ‘hibernation’ or ‘deep sleep’ after a period of inactivity as opposed to using screen savers to protect your screen. Continue reading
