Greenpeace ranks greenest electronic companies (EcoSeed)

Greenpeace released this year’s Guide to Greener Electronics to highlight companies that make good on their promises to make their products more environmentally friendly.

NokiaSony Ericsson and Philips remain the greenest companies, making the top three. The companies fared well on the 10-point scorecard that evaluated their efforts to cut hazardous substances used in products, reduce climate impacts out of business operations and recycle.

Some of the toxic substances in question were mainly polyvinyl chloride, widely known as PVC, and brominated flame retardants or BFR, which are not biodegradable and are harmful to the environment. Antimony, beryllium, phthalates and other harmful compounds are also included.

Some leaders in the previous poll fell from the rankings while efforts from last year’s worst earned them higher standings in Greenpeace’s list.

Apple took the biggest drop, not because it lost any points or failed in staying clean and green but because several other companies overtook it with more significant improvements. The computer company fell to ninth place from fifth place last year.

Corporate IT Can Lead the Way to Sustainability

A recently released report from leading market research firm Technology Business Research (TBR) identifies IT departments as potentially the ideal organizations for companies to lead their sustainability campaigns. TBR’s 2010 Global Business Sustainability Survey Report finds that corporate IT departments recognize the business value of adopting sustainability initiatives. Corporations can and should look to their IT departments to lead the charge in their corporate green efforts.

“Sustainability continues to be the primary disruptive business challenge we face today,” said TBR CEO Dave Mack. “What too many companies have failed to identify is that their IT departments may have already embraced sustainability, not because it made for good press, but because it was a good business decision.”

Corporate IT departments have identified clear business initiatives that reduce costs in addition to addressing environmental concerns. At 41% of survey respondents, Virtualization remains the top initiative for both sustainability and cost reduction with Server Energy Reduction a close second response at 33%. These are tangible actions IT departments have taken to add efficiencies to their lines of business with the secondary consequence of being green.

Green credit where credit's due – The role of IT Companies such as Google

It’s been encouraging to see the effort that the large ICT companies have made in recent years to make their organisations more sustainable – the days of ‘greenwashing’ have pretty much past.

This week Newsweek announced its rankings of green companies based on environmental impact, policies and reputation. Six of the top ten in the US are well known ICT suppliers: Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Adobe and Yahoo!

The down side is that in an industry dominated by companies from the US, that’s where much of the effort has stayed. While Dell is ranked the greenest company in the US table, it doesn’t appear in Newsweek’s alternative list of the global green 100. For the UK industry, Vodafone is highest on the global list in 11th place, while BT and Logica don’t appear, even though they have both won a string of awards in recognition of their sustainability efforts.

One notable absence from the Newsweek lists is Google. The company has been involved in a number of green investments and activities, although often focused outside the business. The most recent is to help finance the development of wind generation off the US Mid Atlantic coast. Google is putting money into the transmission ‘backbone’ that will collect power from offshore wind farms and bring it onshore through sub-sea cables.

Half the productivity, twice the carbon

Green technologies key for IT industry profitability in 2020

Unless the IT industry adopts new energy-efficient technologies in the coming decade, it runs a serious risk of being unable to contribute to growing the global economy if limits are placed on carbon emissions. The findings come from an 18-month investigation by scholars at the Institute for Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics (ISAID) in Singapore and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston.

“In the face of growing global concerns over greenhouse carbon emission, the key for the industry is finding new technologies that deliver more performance for each kilogram of CO2 emitted,” said Rice computer scientist Krishna Palem, who directs ISAID, a joint institute of Rice and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU). “Fortunately, there are viable technological options on the table and the information and communication industries have a strong track record of embracing new technologies.”

The report found the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in the U.S. is on pace to grow its carbon emissions at twice the rate of its contributions to gross domestic product over the coming decade.

“In the U.S. in 2009, the economic output of the ICT industry per kilogram of CO2 emitted was about $2.83, and in a business-as-usual scenario, that output will fall to about $1.06 per kilogram of CO2 by 2020,” said study co-author Chris Bronk, a fellow in technology, society and public policy at the Baker Institute and lecturer of computer science at Rice. “Based on those numbers, the industry is headed for a brick wall if limits are placed on CO2 emissions. In a carbon-constrained economy, green innovation will be absolutely essential for ICT profitability.”

The report included a painstaking analysis of both the carbon emissions and the amount of gross domestic product (GDP) that are delivered each year by the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. The report also offers a new metric, the sustainability innovation quotient (SIQ), which expresses the number of dollars returned in GDP by the ICT industry for each kilogram of carbon dioxide it emits.

Sustainability: To Pay or Not to Pay

We see it and hear about it every time we turn around. Green. Eco-friendly. The trends toward sustainable products touches on the products we use as a consumer and how we run our businesses each day.

However, the quest for sustainability in the wide-format market presents both an exciting opportunity for businesses and a challenge for everyone, according to Rick Scrimger, VP/General Manager for Roland DGA (Booth 4338). “Across the industry, there is a trend toward more sustainable business practices including cartridge recycling and the development of eco-friendly inks and media. The definition of ‘green’ continues to evolve, and we expect standards to be put in place in the near future,” says Scrimger.

“The biggest immediate challenge we face as an industry is simply defining the term. The good news is we aren’t alone,” says Mark Overington, VP of Marketing, EFI VUTEk (Booth 2000). “The terms are highly subjective. The industry has made some good strides forward in developing recycled substrates, printers with greater energy efficiency and an overall reduction in VOC’s. However, there’s still a lot of misleading information and general confusion about what products are truly ‘green’ out there.”

Putting Sustainability Into Practice

Looking over blog topics from my peers that have been published during the last few years, I see the migration of interests and “hot” topics among the data center industry. When we realized how wasteful we were with energy in data centers (along with the rest of the world), we were all caught a bit off-guard by the magnitude of the waste. Now that there are a plethora of vendors who offer products and services to address the first steps, such as generating data to get an idea of what’s happening, end users have many choices. The current question is: Are we deploying the solutions that make data centers more sustainable?

Well-run data center operators are measuring and monitoring. One client of mine said he thought 30% of end users are working diligently at lowering their energy use, an additional 10% have done all they can, and the remaining 60% are still waiting to see if someone will tell them what to do. From the 40% who have given active consideration to energy efficiency and started their monitoring programs, the results are interesting.

Fujitsu Stakes Claim in Green IT Services

After a successful test in Australia, Fujitsu is launching a portfolio of green IT services that it says will help the average enterprise reduce its carbon footprint and energy costs.

Kartik Ravel, practice director of green IT for Fujitsu enterprise business services, while the new offerings absolutely will address data center efficiency, they are more focused on changing user electricity consumption habits related to desktop and peripheral technologies. “A kilowatt is a kilowatt, regardless of what device it comes from,” he says.

One of the companies that already has had the benefit of the Fujitsu services is Toyota; Fujitsu says it helped the company save 43 percent on its IT costs, although it doesn’t say how much of this is specifically from electricity.
