ChargePoint Applauds NYC’s Mayor Bloomberg’s Call for Electric Vehicle Readiness

CAMPBELL, Calif.–()–New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has laid out a bold plan to make 20 percent of New New York City parking spaces electric vehicle (EV) ready. ChargePoint congratulates Mayor Bloomberg for his vision.

Mayor Bloomberg laid out his plan today in his State of the City address. It calls for the creation of 10,000 EV ready spaces over the next seven years. New York is a leader in electric vehicle adoption rates, with 2,598 registered vehicles as of January, 2013, up 76 percent from just three months ago. Continue reading

Puget Sound Energy Wind Farms Post New One-Day Generating Record

BELLEVUE, Wash.–()–Nearly a quarter of the electricity Puget Sound Energy customers consumed on Tuesday came from the utility’s three wind farms, marking a new one-day production record for the PSE energy facilities.

Between midnight Monday and midnight Tuesday, the 1.1 million homes and businesses powered by PSE received 23.5 percent of their electricity from the utility’s three Eastern Washington wind farms.

“This milestone underscores the role wind power can play in meeting our energy needs,” said David Mills, PSE vice president of Energy Supply Operations. “Wind is now a key resource for providing our customers with reliable, affordable electricity. IES Expands Solar Capabilities

Smart Appliance Market to Reach Nearly $35 Billion Annually by 2020

As utilities around the world deploy smart meters, smart appliances (which use an intelligent power management strategy to optimize the load on the power distribution grid) have a significant role to play in realizing the vision of the smart grid.  Currently, these appliances are limited in terms of availability and types of products, but they will start to represent an increasing share of the total appliance market after 2015.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the annual value of the smart appliance market will grow from $613 million in 2012 to $34.9 billion in 2020. Nearly 70 Percent of Electric Meters in Europe Will be Smart by 2020

european_unionSmart electric meters provide a platform for energy efficiency improvements, new customer services, and network optimization.  To achieve those goals across Europe, more than 30 million meters will need to be deployed annually during the peak years of activity, and major upgrade programs will need to be executed simultaneously in Europe’s largest countries, along with many smaller projects across a diverse range of countries and utilities.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, nearly 70 percent of all electric meters in Europe (and 90 percent in Western Europe) will be smart by 2020.
