Frack Water Market to Grow Nine-fold to $9 Billion in 2020

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–With hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” – the use of high pressure water to help extract previously inaccessible shale gas – eager to replicate its success outside the U.S., the market for water treatment will grow nine-fold to $9 billion in 2020. This expansion will spur technology innovation and novel thinking about water disposal and reuse, but the field is rapidly growing overcrowded, creating significant risk for new entrants, Lux Research said in a report.

“Fracking represents a significant water treatment challenge – hydrocarbons, heavy metals, scalants, microbes, and salts in produced and flowback water from shale gas wells represent a water treatment challenge on par with the most difficult industrial wastewaters”

Fracking requires between 4,000 m3 and over 22,000 m3 (25,000 bbl to 140,000 bbl) of water per well and produces toxin-laced brine that can be more than six times as salty as the sea. Its growth has energized the water industry, inspiring a bumper crop of new water treatment startups vying to treat the highly challenging flowback water. Continue reading

Fairtrade Access Fund To Provide Financing To Smallholder Farmers

BRUSSELS, BONN, Germany, and WASHINGTON, April 24, 2012 / 3BL Media / PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Today, Incofin Investment Management, Fairtrade International and Grameen Foundation announced they are establishing the first fund to focus on the unmet demand of smallholder farmers for long-term loans.  Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ:SBUX) joins as the Fund’s first anchor private investor with a $1.3m (1m euros) commitment. The Fund will offer investors both financial and demonstrable social results.

The Fairtrade Access Fund will provide farmers’ cooperatives and associations the long-term loans they need to renew their farms or adopt new technologies and equipment.

Smallholder farmers in developing countries have tremendous potential but are held back from growth because they cannot access the financing they need. According to a 2010 survey conducted by Fairtrade International, Fairtrade farmers in Latin America alone say they need $500 million to cover their financing needs, more than half of this for long-term loans.

The Fairtrade Access Fund uniquely offers a full range of loan types and technical assistance to enable farmers’ organizations to strengthen and secure their businesses, including a new facility that will allow farmers to receive timely information on Fairtrade certification practices, crop management and localized market information via their mobile phones. New Survey Shows Shift Toward More Plant-based Options with Sodexo Meatless Monday Initiative

(3BL Media) Gaithersburg, MD – April 9, 2012 – Americans eat more meat than any other developed nation – a lifestyle choice that can take a toll on health and the environment. A new report just released by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future indicates that Sodexo’s Meatless Monday initiative has helped the leader in Quality of Daily Life Solutions accomplish its goal of serving healthier, more sustainable choices while maintaining sales and increasing customer satisfaction.

“It’s one thing to know from a nutritional perspective that reducing your intake of saturated fats is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. But it’s a whole other challenge to make that case to a nation of serious meat lovers,” said Nitu Gupta, vice president food and nutrition brand management, Sodexo. “The popularity of the Meatless Monday initiative demonstrates the fact that it indeed can be done through education combined with great tasting plant-based menu options.”

Sodexo launched its Meatless Monday initiative in January 2011 in the company’s health care, government and corporate divisions as part of its ongoing effort to work as a strategic partner in meeting client objectives for sustainability, health and wellness and support for local communities. The program included new plant-based options and communications material that educated diners on the benefits of eating less meat and more vegetables. According to the survey of 245 sites, the Meatless Monday program helped accomplish several important Sodexo goals. 87 percent of respondents noted that it demonstrated Sodexo’s commitment to health and 71 percent reported that it made vegetarian options more appealing. Major Investors Warn Energy Companies of Business Risks in Flaring Gas at Shale Oil Wells

(3BL Media) Boston, MA – March 29, 2012 – With escalating shale oil production putting the US on track to become the world’s largest oil producer, investors are challenging an increasingly common industry practice – burning off or ‘flaring’ associated natural gas from shale oil wells – as environmentally damaging, economically wasteful and a threat to the industry’s bottom line.

“We are concerned that excessive flaring, because of its impact on air quality and climate change, poses significant risks for the companies involved, and for the industry at large, ultimately threatening the industry’s license to operate,” wrote three-dozen investors in a letter sent this week to 21 of the industry’s largest shale oil producers, including Continental Resources and Chesapeake Energy.

The letter notes that in North Dakota alone, which produced an average of 418,000 barrels each day last year and is now the third largest source of domestic oil production behind Texas and Alaska, annual flaring-related emissions were equivalent to more than two million tons of carbon dioxide, as much as adding 384,000 cars to the road. Obama Announces New Tools to Help Consumers Manage Electricity Use and Shrink Bills

SANTA CLARA, CA – Today, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra joined utility and technology executives in Silicon Valley to announce several new online tools that will allow consumers in California and other states to download their household energy use information and help them save energy and money.

Central to today’s announcements, two of California’s three largest utilities—Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric—launched “Green Button,” a new feature on their websites that will let nearly six million households representing about 17 million electricity consumers download their own detailed energy usage information with a simple click of a button. In addition, Southern California Edison (California’s second largest utility), Glendale Water & Power, Oncor, Pepco Holdings Inc, and several other utilities across the country that collectively serve an additional 11.3 million households also plan to make the feature available later this year.

Access to data on household energy use is crucial to helping consumers conserve energy and save money. And because Green Button is designed around an open data standard that is available to all, it is already spurring a burst of innovation among website and software developers interested in using that standard to provide novel services—from information about how to save energy or choose appropriately sized solar panels to fun apps that allow individuals to compete against Facebook friends to save energy. The Green Button is also expected to support a new generation of interactive thermostats and virtual energy audits that will recommend energy-efficiency retrofit improvements for homes and businesses.
