“Ultimately, free global competition is good for American consumers and American workers. That’s why all of the major segments of the American solar industry, including solar manufacturers, have united to oppose SolarWorld’s reckless and hypocritical campaign to raise solar prices”

Jigar Shah, the President of CASE, stated, “Today SolarWorld received one of its biggest subsidies yet – an average 31% tax on its competitors. What’s worse, it will ultimately come right out of the paychecks of American solar workers. Fortunately, these duties are much lower than the 250% tax that SolarWorld originally requested. This decision will increase solar electricity prices in the U.S. precisely at the moment solar power is becoming competitive with fossil fuel generated electricity.”

“At the same time, CASE recognizes that today’s decision is ‘preliminary.’ Between now and a final decision before the end of the year, there are many issues that will be addressed and whose resolution would lead to a significantly lower tariff. CASE will continue to fight SolarWorld’s anti-consumer and anti-jobs efforts to ensure a better result for America’s solar industry,” continued Shah.

“The global market for solar cells and modules is more competitive than ever, and companies around the world, including SolarWorld, have been forced to cut prices to compete,” Shah added. “Ultimately, free global competition is good for American consumers and American workers. That’s why all of the major segments of the American solar industry, including solar manufacturers, have united to oppose SolarWorld’s reckless and hypocritical campaign to raise solar prices,” Shah concluded.

American Solar Project Development and Construction Companies Respond to Tariff Decision

The vast majority of the 100,000 jobs in the American solar industry are in sales, marketing, design, installation, engineering construction and maintenance of solar projects. These jobs depend on affordably-priced solar panels, and companies would have to lay-off workers if solar panel prices rise as a result of this investigation. Consequently, American solar developers and installers have expressed unified opposition to SolarWorld’s campaign to impose taxes on solar panels in the U.S., including:

According to Kevin Lapidus, Senior Vice President Legal and Government Affairs for SunEdison, “The U.S. solar industry has been growing, adding new solar electric systems, creating jobs and investing billions of dollars in the U.S. energy infrastructure. By increasing the price of modules and therefore the price of solar energy, these tariffs will undermine the success of the U.S. solar industry and reduce the ability of solar energy to compete with electricity generated from fossil fuel.”

Ken Button, co-founder and President of Verengo Solar, stated, “As the second largest residential solar company in the country, Verengo has helped thousands of middle class families save money during tough economic times by installing solar. Because our customers are very price sensitive, today’s decision to increase costs for solar cells and panels will make it harder for American families to access solar.”

American Solar Manufacturers Respond to Tariff Decision

The majority of American solar manufacturers, which outnumber those in the Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing (CASM), have also expressed broad opposition to SolarWorld’s calls for protectionism in the American solar industry. Companies representing more than 3,000 American manufacturing jobs, including GT Advanced Technologies, REC Silicon, MEMC, Suntech, and others, have all expressed their opposition to trade barriers and to a U.S.-China solar trade war. By comparison, members of CASM, which supports SolarWorld’s trade fight, represent significantly fewer solar manufacturing jobs.

Tore Torvund, CEO of REC Silicon, with 500 solar jobs in the United States, commented, “This decision is short-sighted in the extreme and a severe setback for President Obama’s clean energy program with its goal of expanding the use of solar and other renewables. Further, we are very concerned about the increased likelihood that China will retaliate with their own tariffs on polysilicon exports from U.S. producers such as REC Silicon. Triggering a solar trade war is not in the best interests of the U.S. solar industry or its customers.”

Tom Gutierrez, CEO of GT Advanced Technologies, with another 500 solar jobs in the United States, stated, “Today’s Department of Commerce decision subsidizes a German-owned company to the tune of an average 31% tax on its competitors and potentially harms U.S.-headquartered companies like GT Advanced Technologies, Dow Chemical, REC Silicon and MEMC. Ultimately, protectionism fosters dependence and high-cost business models, rather than the innovation and agile approaches required for companies to succeed in the global marketplace. Now is the time for the U.S. solar industry to move forward with the development of advanced technologies that create jobs and enhance our energy security—in spite of this new barrier. American solar manufacturing can compete without special protections.”

CASE Notes the Hypocrisy of SolarWorld’s Allegations

Finally, CASE noted that SolarWorld has openly admitted to selling its solar cells and modules at a loss, as all solar manufacturers globally are struggling to remain profitable amidst a highly competitive market environment for solar cells and modules.

According to testimony before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and media interviews, SolarWorld has stated it is selling its products below the cost of production in an effort to maintain market share. This aggressive pricing strategy is exactly what German-based SolarWorld accuses its China-based competitors of doing as part of petitions before the U.S. DOC’s anti-dumping investigation.

One Analyst’s View

According to one industry analyst, Jesse Pichel with Jeffries Group Inc., “Environmentalists and the unemployed should be equally disappointed with this decision because lower cost solar panels make solar more competitive with dirty fossil fuels. It should be clear by now that there are more U.S. jobs on the installation side of the solar business than on manufacturing. These cases have a chilling effect on business and it will linger for a long time. It’s unfortunate that SolarWorld has taken this scorched Earth approach and that they are distracting from the growth of U.S. jobs and affordable solar energy.”

About CASE: The Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy (CASE), a coalition of American solar companies representing 97% to 98% of the U.S. solar industry jobs, believes free trade and industry competition are critical to making solar electricity affordable for everyone. CASE is united in its commitment to creating jobs through the growth and development of the American solar industry. The duties were calculated to counter the Chinese industry’s illegal practice of dumping products, or selling them at artificially low prices, in the United States to seize market share here.

The U.S. Department of Commerce issued anti-dumping duties of 31.14 percent on imports of solar cells and panels from Suntech, 31.22 percent from Trina Solar, 31.18 percent from other companies that had requested but not received individual duty determinations and 249.96 percent from all other Chinese producers, including those controlled by the Chinese government.

The department also announced that in light of a massive, evasive surge of imports ahead of the determination, these new duties would apply retroactively 90 days. As a result of this determination of so-called critical circumstances, importers of Chinese solar products must post bonds or cash deposits in the full amounts of anti-dumping duties on imports from now forward as well as back to mid-February.

“Today, SolarWorld and the many industry players who embrace the sustainable efficiency gains and price declines that come from fair competition can take heart that the U.S. government is standing up against Big China Solar,” said Gordon Brinser, president of SolarWorld Industries America Inc. and leader of the Coalition for Solar Manufacturing (CASM). “Commerce’s careful measures could help thwart China’s illegal drive to control the solar market and supplant manufacturers and jobs in America, the very country that invented, pioneered and innovated solar to today’s mainstream viability.”

“For the many former employees of at least 12 solar producers that have staged layoffs, shuttered plants or entered bankruptcies since 2010, it may be too late. But today’s announcement gives rise to the possibility that domestic solar manufacturing, environmentally sustainable solar production and robust global competition might one day soon return to boosting U.S. manufacturing, jobs and energy security.”

“In our trade cases, the administration of President Obama is taking steps to fulfill pledges to hold China accountable to U.S. and world trade laws,” he said. “We look forward to seeing Commerce’s careful investigations and findings continue to develop through September.”

SolarWorld – the largest, most experienced and only fully vertically-integrated manufacturer of crystalline silicon solar in the Western Hemisphere – began leading CASM when it filed its trade cases on Oct. 19 with support from six other manufacturers. Since then, CASM has grown to 210 employers representing more than 17,121 employees, about 85 percent operating in downstream businesses such as solar system installation.

In representing the domestic manufacturing industry, SolarWorld contends that the government of China has showered its manufacturers with support to cover costs in many phases of their business lives, spur them to massively overbuild production capacity, export more than 90 percent of production and sell solar products at dumped prices in the U.S. market. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that without such sponsorship, Chinese producers confront a 5 percent cost disadvantage in producing and delivering solar into the U.S. market, compared with domestic producers. In March, the largest Chinese producer said unsustainably low pricing will “rationalize” as competition is driven out of business.

In March, Commerce issued a preliminary determination that 10 categories of Chinese subsidy programs were illegal under U.S. and world trade law and imposed anti-subsidy duties ranging from 2.9 percent to 4.73 percent to counteract those subsidies. The anti-dumping duties are added on top of the anti-subsidy duties. The department also found critical circumstances relating to the anti-subsidy determination, meaning that those duties are being collected on solar cells and panels imported from then forward as well as back to late December. The preliminary determination was incomplete, however, and Commerce is expected yet this month to determine the extent of duties to offset additional categories of subsidy programs.

After today’s ruling, Commerce will immediately initiate a final, more in-depth phase of its investigation, including examinations of solar operations and financial records in China.

Under a more aggressive scenario, in which the global economy expands more rapidly and policy mandates pertaining to climate change are more robust, spending could reach $15.6 billion by 2016 and $30 billion annually by 2020, the cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts.

“Buoyed by consistent increases in major mining commodity prices, overall market capitalization in the mining industry has soared by 26%, and mining company executives are becoming increasingly more sensitive about rethinking traditional mining industry approaches to obtaining and consuming energy,” says research director Kerry-Ann Adamson. “Accordingly, the mining industry is positioned to address energy costs and climate change from a position of economic strength.”

The Asia Pacific region, which has seen its market share of the worldwide mining sector increase to 44% in the last decade, will see the greatest investment in renewable energy in the mining industry through 2020, at $9.4 billion. In the United States, the market will reach $4.6 billion in the same year. In general, Pike Research anticipates that investments in, and purchases of, renewable energy technologies from the mining industry will range from 10% to 20% of total energy expenditures during the forecast period.

Pike Research’s report, “Renewable Energy in the Mining Industry”, provides a detailed examination of energy consumption dynamics in the global mining industry, along with an analysis of the market opportunity for greater utilization of renewable energy. The study assesses the market drivers and policy issues that are influencing mining companies’ increasing interest in renewable energy, along with a review of the technology issues associated with each option. The strategies of key industry players are profiled in depth and market forecasts through 2020 are provided for renewable energy investment in the sector. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’s website.

Intel’s new 2020 environmental goals include:

“From product to customer to employee to environment, corporate responsibility allows Intel to have a greater and more influential impact on industries, communities and the global economy.”

Reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent on a per chip basis by 2020 from 2010 levels1.

Design all new buildings to a minimum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification between 2010 and 2020.

Increase the energy efficiency of notebook computers and data center products 25 times by 2020 from 2010 levels2.

Achieve additional energy savings of 1.4 billion kWh from 2012 to 2015, and publish additional energy conservation targets for 2016–2020 in its 2012 report.

Reduce water use on a per chip basis below 2010 levels by 2020.

Achieve zero chemical waste to landfill by 2020.

“At Intel, corporate responsibility is a crucial component to the overall growth of our business,” said Michael Jacobson, Intel’s director of corporate responsibility. “From product to customer to employee to environment, corporate responsibility allows Intel to have a greater and more influential impact on industries, communities and the global economy.”

Other highlights from the 2011 report include:

Supply Chain Responsibility

Intel was again recognized in the Gartner Supply Chain Top 25 list for excellence in supply chain management, ranking 16th in 2011, up from 18th in 2010 and 25th in 2009.

To address the issue of conflict minerals, through the end of 2011, Intel had identified 98 smelter sites and visited 48 of them in 16 countries to lay the groundwork for third-party audits. Intel’s goal is to demonstrate that its microprocessors are validated as conflict-free for tantalum by the end of 2012, and to manufacture the world’s first microprocessor fully validated as conflict-free across all four minerals (gold, tantalum, tin and tungsten) by the end of 2013.

Renewable Power

For the past 4 years, Intel has been recognized as the largest voluntary purchaser of green power in the United States, under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership program.

Since 2009, Intel has collaborated with third parties to complete 15 solar electric installations across nine Intel campuses in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon, Israel and Vietnam — collectively generating more than 5 million kWh per year of clean energy.

Since 2001, Intel has invested more than $58 million and completed over 1,563 energy conservation and energy efficiency projects, saving more than 825 million kWh of energy, or the approximate CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 70,933 average U.S. homes for 1 year. These investments also enabled Intel to reduce energy costs in 2011 by $10.9 million.

Employee Engagement

Since 2008, Intel has linked a portion of its employees’ variable compensation to environmental sustainability metrics.

In 2011, as part of Intel’s Environmental Excellence Awards, 62 employee teams from around the world were nominated for their work that helped Intel reduce its environmental impact. In fact, the estimated annual cost savings from the 2011 winning projects exceeded $70 million.

In 2011, Intel provided $125,000 in funding for nine employee projects via its Sustainability in Action grant program — including the installation of a rainwater harvesting project at a school in Israel and the design of a zero-emissions heating and cooling control and supply system for a local community building in China.

In 2011, 50 percent of Intel employees donated over 1.1 million hours of service through the Intel Involved volunteer program — an average of 13 hours per employee — at 5,100 schools and nonprofit organizations in 45 countries.

Green Building Design and LEED Certification

By the end of 2011, Intel had achieved LEED Silver Certification for a total of 18 buildings across five sites in Arizona, Costa Rica, China, Israel and Malaysia.

Education

In 2011, Intel reached its goal of providing professional development through the Intel Teach® program to over 10 million teachers in more than 70 countries, reaching over 300 million students. In addition, the program was introduced in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Gabon and Tanzania.

In 2011, Intel launched She Will, a campaign to educate and empower girls and women around the world by fostering equal economic and educational opportunities.

The California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) Board of Governors today voted to streamline the process for interconnecting distributed generation, which includes renewable projects.

“Distributed generation projects tend to be smaller and more numerous than power plant projects that connect directly to the ISO grid”
The ISO will annually publish information showing quantities of potential distributed generation at various grid locations. The assessment will be used by load-serving entities, resource developers and local regulatory authorities in negotiating renewable energy contracts and developing projects.

“The new approach will align ISO policy with the state’s goal to accelerate distributed generation – smaller scale resources connected to utility distribution systems and located close to customers,” said ISO Board Chair Bob Foster. “This results in a diversified power mix, a key element of transitioning to a greener and more sustainable electricity future.”

The benefit of the new interconnection process is that distributed generation will obtain deliverability status in about half the time as the current process. Achieving “deliverability” qualifies projects as eligible for being counted toward the resource adequacy requirements of utilities and other load serving entities. Currently, it can take about two years to obtain deliverability status at the wholesale level because of the in-depth engineering analysis and customer consultation performed as part of the interconnection process.

“Distributed generation projects tend to be smaller and more numerous than power plant projects that connect directly to the ISO grid,” said VP, Market and Infrastructure Development Keith Casey, PhD. “We challenged ourselves to find a new and innovative way to help these projects meet a faster timetable for establishing deliverability and negotiating contracts with utilities and other load-serving entities.”

The Board approval today will enable the ISO to file tariff changes with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) so that the streamlined process can be integrated into the ISO’s 2012/2013 transmission planning cycle. With a timely FERC approval, the ISO will perform the first distributed generation deliverability assessment in November, publish the first results in February 2013, and conduct the first allocation of available deliverability shortly afterward.

The California ISO operates the state’s wholesale transmission grid, providing open and non-discriminatory access supported by a competitive energy market and comprehensive planning efforts. Partnering with about a hundred client organizations, the nonprofit public benefit corporation is dedicated to the continual development and reliable operation of a modern grid that operates for the benefit of consumers. The ISO bulk power market allocates space on transmission lines, maintains operating reserves and matches supply with demand.

A range of factors including pledges to reduce GHG emissions, the desire to minimize the impact of rising energy prices, and the decreasing cost of deploying base stations run on clean energy is driving telecom service providers to create more sustainable systems for delivering their services. According to a new report from Pike Research, however, the pathway to achieving these goals has shifted: The focus of green telecom has swung strongly to energy efficiency. While clean power is not to be discounted, operators (and thus suppliers) are placing much more emphasis today on curbing power consumption than on deploying green base stations.

By 2016, Pike Research forecasts, sustainable telecom network infrastructure investments will represent over 61% of global telecom capital expenditures, representing a $194 billion market. Of these investments, 65% will go into mobile networks in 2016.

“Green power is not feasible or economical at all locations,” says research director Eric Woods. “In most cases, some type of green power supply can be deployed, but there are areas where this is not an option or the ROI is too low to justify. Services such as network and site planning can also reduce the energy needed to run a network, and vendors are also placing more emphasis on their own supply chains to reduce energy consumption and decrease emissions.”

Within mobile networks, base stations and switching centers may consume 60% to 85% of an operator’s network energy usage, so improvements here are critical. Concentrating on improvements in radio frequency (RF) amplifiers, switches, new network architectures and topologies, fresh air cooling solutions, and the use of sustainable energy solutions for off-grid locations, service providers and vendors are combining forces to make sure that the newer 4G networks require less power than legacy networks. As a result, Pike Research forecasts that emissions levels associated with mobile networks will decline to 251 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) by 2016 versus 266 MtCO2e for 2011.

Pike Research’s report, “Green Telecom Networks”, focuses on the direct impact of green technologies and practices as applied to telecommunications networks. Specifically addressed are the market drivers and business decisions that drive the usage and implementation of green practices across fixed and mobile networks. In addition, quantitative market forecasts through 2016 are provided to describe the effects of these green technologies and practices on operational and environmental costs. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’s website.

The Gartner Cool Vendors in Solar Energy 2012 report highlights four vendors whose innovations could have a disruptive impact on the PV solar industry by dramatically reducing the cost of solar-generated electricity. The report highlights that improving the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells can be an effective cost reduction strategy, but only if increases in manufacturing complexity and cost are kept to a minimum. Suniva recently announced that its ARTisun™ Select series solar cells are now averaging 19 percent efficiency in plant-wide production, yielding conversion efficiencies of up to 16.3 percent at the module level.

“The report by Gartner recognizes that the Solar industry will continue to be driven by innovation that produces high efficiency, high performance cells at a cost that is sensible for today’s market conditions,” said John Baumstark, CEO, Suniva. “We’re proud of our inclusion in the report and for the recognition of our pioneering and proprietary work in producing the highest efficiency cells and modules possible through low cost manufacturing techniques.”

Suniva’s continued research, innovation and deep experience have led to these most recent cost-effective cell-efficiency improvements. In 2011, the company formed its Manufacturing Innovation Center to improve processes and enhance performance. Suniva’s unique, low-cost approach achieves these efficiency gains without the added steps and processing costs that traditionally characterize the means of increasing performance, thus avoiding the complexities and premiums of enhanced performance.

“Building information modeling represents one of the most important breakthroughs in building design technology over the last decade,” says senior analyst Eric Bloom. “The next generation of buildings will be more intelligent and energy-efficient than any before. However, designing and delivering such buildings requires a level of collaboration that only BIM software can facilitate.”

The market for BIM software tools is led by a handful of well-known names, such as Autodesk, Bentley, Tekla, Nemetschek, and Gehry Technologies. Small firms that enter the market with an innovative BIM (or other) solution generally do not last long as independent firms because the larger players strategically acquire them to enhance their own product portfolios. The industry has also seen a spate of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in recent years, as firms prepare for the next phase of BIM technology advancement in areas like BIM to Field solutions, cloud-based solutions, and mobile capabilities.

Pike Research’s report, “Building Information Modeling”, provides a comprehensive analysis of the global market opportunity for BIM software, training/support services, and project management/collaboration tools. The study includes detailed assessments of the business drivers that are stimulating adoption of BIM, the challenges faced by the industry, and technology issues in the evolving BIM market. Key industry players are profiled and detailed market forecasts, segmented by geography and application segment, extend through 2020. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’swebsite.

(3BL Media) Mexico, DF - May 8, 2012 - In a global context where it grows the importance of sustainability and, specifically, quantification and monitoring of emissions of greenhouse gases, reporting and climate managementhave become key factors for businesses in terms of competitiveness and access to new markets.

Therefore, the British NGO Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), along with Green Plus, a partner in Mexico of CDP,and Banorte-Ixe, as a signatory for Latin America and the only Mexican private bank to participate in the project, carried out this day the workshop “The Impact of Climate Change in the Business”, with the participation of various specialists and entrepreneurs.

Participants in the symposium, held at the corporate offices of Grupo Financiero Banorte in this capital, andstreamed video to Monterrey, stressed that disseminate information and manage the climate change issue is related to better stock market performance companies, as well as their participation in the Carbon IndexPerformance Leadership Index (FPIC) and Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). They noted that companies with an eye toward climate change offered approximately 2 times more financial returns to investors in the periodJanuary 2005 to May 2011.

Fernando Figueiredo, CDP Executive Director for South America, said in his speech that, although the so-calledgreenhouse gases are good for the planet, ”the issue that we are generating through diversasfuentes energy are beyond what is necessary, since the total global emissions, carbon occupies 77 percent. “

Meanwhile, Claudia Lechuga, Executive Director of Green Plus, said that “the climate change issue from a corporate perspective is undoubtedly an issue of competitiveness in the growing demand for information byinterest groups surrounding businesses, about the social and environmental impact of products and services they offer. It is an issue, she said, that adds value to business and accounting challenges, risks for the same business operations, but also create opportunities that can capitalize on their behalf, such as identifying new market nichesand creating new products. ”

By making use of the word, Mayra Hernandez Gonzalez, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility of Grupo Financiero Banorte, said: “For us, climate change and carbon reduction is a key priority in our strategy andintegrated business objectives in the medium and long term, so that environmental protection is one of the pillars of Social Responsibility policy, which we look for opportunities based on the highest impact and lowest cost with respect to energy efficiency, emissions reduction, energy reduction, water and waste and environmental education. ”

The speakers shared their experiences and knowledge about the correct way to respond to the request of theReport which annually sends the CDP to a considerable number of companies around the world, that this document is a tool through which they can provide clear information on the risks and opportunities climate change represents to their operations, and to understand and manage their emissions of gases (GHGs).

Note that the results of the latest edition of the CDP, obtained last year, show that the management of emissionsof gases has an increasingly strategic role for Latin American companies. According to the Carbon DisclosureProject Report Latin America 2011, increased the number of companies that address issues related to climate change at higher hierarchical levels. (93% versus 72% in 2010).

In 2011, the CDP information request was sent to about 5,000 enterprises, of which responded to a total of2.038, while in Latin America, 50 companies were invited to report their emissions and policies to combat climate change, the 7 Mexican companies which provided data about its strategy on climate change through CDP: Banorte, Cemex, Peñoles Industries, Kimberly Clark Mexico, Walmart de Mexico, Grupo Bimbo and Fira.

About CDP

(3BL Media) New York, NY – May 9, 2012 – NHL Green has teamed up with Sterling Planet, the nation’s leading retail provider of environmental assets for corporate, utility and government clients, to mitigate the environmental impact of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Sterling Planet will supply the NHL with all environmental assets needed for the League to counterbalance the estimated carbon emissions resulting from arena electricity consumption during all Playoff games and team air travel throughout the Playoffs, based on conservative projections of the expected carbon footprint associated with the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Accordingly, Sterling Planet will provide the NHL with 9.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) in the form of Green-e® Energy certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from U.S. wind projects and 97 metric tons of verified emission reductions — also known as carbon offsets — from projects authenticated by the Verified Carbon Standard or the Climate Action Reserve, independent accounting programs which validate, measure, monitor and ensure the environmental benefit of the carbon offset projects.

Additionally, 100% of the League’s estimated 2012 electricity usage at its New York City headquarters, estimated at 1.5 million kWh, will be counterbalanced through this initiative.

The RECs and carbon offsets together will create a benefit of more than 15 million pounds (6,854 metric tons) of avoided emissions of carbon dioxide. The environmental benefit compares to taking approximately 1,310 cars off U.S. roads for a year.

“The National Hockey League already is doing its part for water conservation and restoration. Now, the NHL is shrinking its carbon footprint,” said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet president and chief executive officer. “The NHL is going the extra distance with this most recent commitment to sustainability, this time to cleaner renewable energy from U.S. wind projects.”

Through this acquisition of RECs and carbon offsets, the NHL will become the first professional sports league to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that encourages organizations to buy green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with purchased electricity use.

“EPA is excited to welcome the NHL as a Green Power Partner and applauds the League’s use of renewable electricity,” said Blaine Collison, Director of EPA’s Green Power Partnership. “The NHL is enhancing its environmental performance by reducing its carbon footprint and is serving as an example for other sports organizations to follow.”

Sterling Planet is the nation’s leading retail provider of renewable energy and other environmental assets. Founded in 2000, Sterling Planet has delivered billions of renewable energy kilowatt-hours in both voluntary and mandated markets, working to improve lives today, while sustaining the planet for future generations.

Owned and operated by Convert Italia, the solar tracking power plant combines Convert Italia’s MX1 horizontal tracking system with Solaria’s advanced low concentration photovoltaic modules. Convert Italia is currently constructing two additional solar power plants using Solaria modules.

“Solaria’s innovative modules are a perfect fit with our Convert MX1 tracker,” said Giuseppe Moro, president of Convert Italia. “Tracking systems, which follow the sun’s transit across the sky, increase sunlight capture, generating up to 30% more electricity than fixed PV arrays. The result combines industry-leading performance and reliability with compelling system economics. Solaria has been a great partner, delivering quality products with a strong focus on customer service. We’ve had high expectations for the performance of the Solaria modules, and those expectations have been met.”

“We’re thrilled to have partnered with Convert Italia,” stated Dan Shugar, Solaria CEO. “Convert Italia’s trackers unlock the unique advantages of Solaria modules. Our proprietary cell multiplication technology enables our high efficiency modules to use less than half the silicon of other PV modules. Solaria modules combined with Convert Italia’s outstanding engineering and attention to detail has led to a highly successful project.”

Solaria’s patented technology and proprietary manufacturing process enable more efficient use of crystalline PV material in standard form factor modules. Optimized for solar tracking systems, Solaria modules use high quality crystalline silicon, robust tempered glass with specialized optical properties, and listed materials for exceptional reliability and performance.

“Pike Research defines energy efficient homes as properties that are built to exceed the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code by at least 15% on a kilowatt-hour per square foot basis”

“Pike Research defines energy efficient homes as properties that are built to exceed the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code by at least 15% on a kilowatt-hour per square foot basis,” says research analyst Brittany Gibson.“Achieving such energy savings, in new construction or in existing building stock, is a design problem complicated by factors such as local climate, availability of materials, funding, and legislation. In order to achieve this level of energy savings, home builders and retrofitters must adopt a systems approach to home design and construction, integrating all aspects of home assembly and operation.”

The global financial crash of 2008-2009 continues to have a strong effect on residential real estate markets, including energy efficient homes. Rising economic prosperity is driving soaring residential construction in Asia Pacific, and the region stands to experience significant growth in energy efficient homes, if appropriate regulatory and financing programs can be implemented. The European Union, meanwhile, represents the most mature market for energy efficient homes globally but will still see the strongest growth through 2020, at a regional CAGR of 44%, driven primarily by energy efficiency and carbon mandates.Growth will be slowest in North America, where the existing building stock remains largely unaddressed at the moment.

Pike Research’s report, “Energy Efficient Homes”, analyzes the global market opportunity for energy efficient homes, including a focus on key market segments such as building envelope improvements, lighting, HVAC and major appliances, water heating, energy audits, and soft costs associated with energy efficiency. Market forecasts are provided through 2020 for both new and existing building stock across five world regions. Details of local, regional, and supranational market drivers and barriers are discussed in depth, and a cross-section of key industry players are profiled, highlighting their product and services offerings. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’s website.

VICTORIA, British Columbia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–At the 2012 LIGHTFAIR International tradeshow (May 9-11th) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Carmanah Technologies Corp. is launching the EG145 solar outdoor street lighting system, the company’s latest addition to its most cost-effective solar-powered outdoor lighting system series to-date. With the addition of this next-generation EG-series system, which provides freeway-level light output from a compact form designed to withstand extreme elements, Carmanah now provides a complete range of solar-powered outdoor lights that address the needs of cost-sensitive markets requiring powerful standalone lighting solutions.

The EG145 solar LED outdoor streetlight is capable of providing just under 3,000 lumens (dusk-to-dawn) for outdoor urban roadway, path and area lighting applications, making it a reliable and robust lighting solution. Through an advanced Carmanah energy management system, the EG145 takes advantage of high cascading efficiencies from solar panel, to charge controller, battery and LED driver. By reducing energy losses and maximizing energy collection, storage and usage, the total system cost is reduced while producing greater light output (energy usage) than any other product for its size in the marketplace. The result is a highly efficient, cost-effective and powerful standalone solar lighting alternative that can significantly reduce project and installation costs where grid-power is either unavailable or costly to access.

Featuring a top-of-pole integrated design which allows for an easy and rapid installation and superior theft and vandalism protection, the EG145 leverages award-winning design elements of the Carmanah EverGEN™ 1700 and 1500-series product lines and is tested to withstand extreme weather conditions and wind load ratings of up to 240 kph (150 mph) with 3 second gusts. Built for tropical coastal regions and arid desert applications, the EG-series is engineered to endure corrosion, heat and dust.

”The success of the EG-series and the introduction of a high performance, low-cost EG145 off-grid street lighting system are positioning Carmanah as the leading provider of solar outdoor lighting solutions in international markets,” said Bruce Cousins, Carmanah CEO. “With the EG145, Carmanah now offers aggressive dollar per lumen pricing for high-performance and reliable solar lighting products, capable of meeting small pathway to freeway lighting applications.”

Unveiled at the 2012 LIGHTFAIR International trade show (May 9th-11th) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, the EG145 solar outdoor street lighting system is available for viewing at the Carmanah booth #5117.

NORTHFIELD, Ill., May 7, 2012 / 3BL Media / PRNewswire/ – Most people have heard the saying that you can’t improve what you can’t measure. But measurement can be complex and time-consuming, especially when it comes to figuring out how to reduce environmental impacts. Which is why Kraft Foods is using lifecycle assessment (LCA) to help it make the right changes and get the best results. LCA measures the footprint of what goes into making a product, from farm to fork and beyond.

“Lifecycle assessment is an important part of our sustainability journey,” said Roger Zellner, Sustainability Director for Research, Development & Quality. “It gives us a competitive advantage, as we now have more insight into how to reduce our products’ footprints, find efficiencies and validate and explain those benefits to customers and consumers. Together, we’re focusing and working smarter and communicating better, which is good for the environment, people and our business.”

This LCA work builds on the multi-year footprinting project Kraft Foods recently used to map its impact on climate change, land and water use. Today, employees around the world are using lifecycle thinking to help uncover ways to eliminate waste in manufacturing. This can reduce the amount of raw materials, such as agricultural commodities, used at the beginning of the supply chain. LCA also can help measure how product and packaging innovations improve on previous designs, and provide a common system to measure and explain those benefits.

For example, in the United States, the Kraft YES Pack salad dressing team used LCA to confirm their design has a reduced environmental impact, using 60 percent less plastic packaging than the previous container. In the U.K., the Kenco coffee team used LCA to confirm its new Eco-Refill package delivered a 70 percent savings in the packaging’s carbon impact footprint compared to its glass counterpart. And in Europe, the Tassimo single-serve beverage team’s LCA showed they could reduce the carbon footprint of each T Disc beverage ingredient package by about 20 percent when upcycling them with partner TerraCycle and diverting them from landfills.

At the heart of Kraft Foods’ reductions in packaging is its Eco-Calculator™. This proprietary tool helps packaging designers create more efficient, sustainable solutions based on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and packaging industry groups. The Eco-Calculator figures the percentage of post-consumer recycled material in a given package design, along with the amount of energy and carbon dioxide emissions required to create the package. It also tells packaging designers how efficiently they’re using materials and how well their designs will fit a product’s physical dimensions. The tool is used along with other business practices, like economic assessments and ability to manufacture, before deciding on a final design.

Eastman received eight of the 67 awards presented for outstanding projects, including one of the 16 Exceptional Merit awards. This marks the 19th consecutive year Eastman has earned energy efficiency awards from ACC.

“Eastman is honored to be recognized again by ACC for our efforts in achieving energy efficiencies in our operations,” said Jim Rogers, Chairman and CEO. “Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through improved energy efficiency is a key part of our vision of being a sustainable chemical company.”

Combined, Eastman’s winning projects save over 737,000 MMBTUs and 337,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. That’s enough energy to power 16,000 homes and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from over 60,000 cars!

“These eight winning projects exhibit innovative examples of control strategy modifications, trials with new types of equipment, creative process redesign and operational changes,” said Sharon Nolen, Corporate Energy Program Manager. “Each success confirms our commitment to saving energy and continuous improvement in energy management.”

Eastman received an Exceptional Merit award for the restructure of its energy program to a corporate-wide program with broad participation and executive level support, and an emphasis on corporate initiatives, designated funding, ENERGY STAR® resources, and employee awareness and engagement in energy conservation. The company was named a 2012 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for its enhanced energy management program and commitment to continuous improvements in energy efficiency.

Seven of Eastman’s awards were for Significant Improvement in Manufacturing.

Eastman’s Longview, Texas site received an award for the following project:

Fuel reduction in cracking furnaces - To reduce fuel usage in cracking furnaces without affecting plant reliability or production, better control over excess air in the furnaces was implemented. Measures taken included extensive maintenance on the burners, installation of sample points for manual readings, repair of broken draft controls and elimination of tramp air. This project resulted in annual energy savings of 213,662 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 12,392 tons.

Eastman’s Kingsport, Tennessee site received awards for these projects:

Energy minimization in acetic acid refining – To reduce energy consumption by a refining system that removes impurities from acetic acid, a two-phase effort involving control strategy modifications and heat integration was implemented. This resulted in annual energy savings of 40,900 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 4,300 tons.

Energy reduction through leak repair in compressed air piping network – A leak survey identified, tagged and quantified leaks from an extensive network of piping that provides compressed air to many manufacturing divisions. The amount of the leak was converted into energy used to compress the air lost to the leaks and the amount of coal burned to generate electricity to run the compressors. This project resulted in annual energy savings of 43,000 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 4515 tons.

Reactor heat recovery – A partial condenser was added to recover heat from the vapor leaving a reactor to preheat the liquid feed to the reactor, providing a significant improvement in energy efficiency as well as increased capacity. This project resulted in annual energy savings of 45,280 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 4754 tons.

Optimization of stabilization water temperature - Lowering the temperature target of stabilization water by 20 degrees in a cellulose acetate manufacturing process resulted in a 15-psig steam usage reduction, resulting in an annual energy savings of 32,000 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 3360 tons.

Improved energy efficiency of dewatering operations - Installation of a crossover shaker for a dewatering operation in a cellulose acetate manufacturing process that improved utilization and energy efficiency by deactivating two dryers and repositioning a dryer for higher utilization. This enhancement resulted in an annual energy savings of 29,454 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 3090 tons.

Distillation column removal – To optimize a new distillation column’s performance, steam flow to the reboiler had to be run at its maximum metering rate at all times to meet all environmental specifications, resulting in an unacceptable energy usage of 79,500 MMBTU annually. A new process flow scheme for handling the organic recovery from wastewater and side product impurities was introduced. This process met all specifications while providing significant energy reduction to the production area to eliminate the energy intensive column. This project resulted in an annual energy savings of 79,500 MMBTU and an annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 8348 tons.

Three companies that save the most watts will receive the Less WattsAward and DVL will donate $1,000 to the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) in each company’s name.

DVGBC is a chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), which set the standards for LEED building. DVL will work with each company to achieve LEED Certification, administered by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED Certification verifies that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Facilities and IT personnel interested in making their data centers more efficient by participating in the Less Watts competition should attend DVL’s “Are You Prepared For What’s Next?” event at their Bristol, PA facility. The free conference takes place on May 9 and 10, offering the same seminars each day. All courses will feature IACET-authorized CEUs. The virtual Less Watts Award ceremony will kick off the annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.

On May 3rd, 2012, Mayor Nutter made an announcement to celebrate the annual Greenbuild Conference, which will take place in Philadelphia from November 20-22, 2013. DVGBC is the host chapter for the three-day event. The convention will feature speakers, networking opportunities, industry showcases, LEED workshops and tours of Philadelphia’s green buildings.

DVL wants to show companies that it only takes one positive, “green-friendly” action to set the tone for data center efficiency and sustainability. KDC Solar will own and operate the SEFs. The SEFs being developed at the resorts will include a mixture of fixed ground mount and custom designed solar parking canopies and car ports located at three separate sites at the resort. The three SEFs will provide more than 8,000,000 kW hours of solar electricity generation per year to help power the resort’s operations. The project is yet another large-scale solar installation for SPI as a result of its preferred provider agreement with KDC Solar.

“We are extremely pleased that it will be Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs and that our finished work will be seen by the thousands of visitors the resorts draw from the tri-state area. We look forward to getting started.”

“This will be our first installation at a major year-round resort,” said Stephen Kircher, CEO for SPI Solar. “We are extremely pleased that it will be Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs and that our finished work will be seen by the thousands of visitors the resorts draw from the tri-state area. We look forward to getting started.”

“We are very happy to have the opportunity to provide the Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs Resorts with clean, low cost, long-term solar energy,” said Hal Kamine, KDC Solar’s CEO. “These installations are an example of the resort’s commitment to the environment, and a complement to KDC Solar’s commitment to “behind-the-meter” solar electric systems for businesses and jobs in New Jersey.”

Located in Vernon, NJ, Mountain Creek is the tri-state area’s premier destination for mountain recreation. Only 47 miles from the George Washington Bridge, Mountain Creek is easily accessed by residents of New York, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania seeking a world-class resort with year-around recreation activities. Among other activities including golf, mountain biking and water park attractions, the Mountain Creek resort offers over 167 acres of terrain on 4 mountain peaks with 100% night skiing and the region’s highest vertical peak at 1040′.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
