MIDLAND, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Yesterday, at the Council for Chemical Research 2013 Annual Meeting in Arlington, Virginia, among leaders from industry, academia and the National Labs, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) unveiled the beta version of the Dow Lab Safety Academy, a digital learning environment that shares Dow’s best-in-class industrial safety culture and practices in a quick and accessible format. Explore the Dow Lab Safety Academy at http://safety.dow.com. The Dow Lab Safety Academy includes dozens of videos featuring lab safety guidelines for a variety of real-life scenarios, grouped under four comprehensive lab safety categories. The website also provides a collection of useful resources such as a chemical reactivity worksheet and an incident alert template, which help promote best practices for safety.

In an effort to continually improve the content and usability of the website, Dow will be seeking feedback from partner universities and other users.

“At Dow, our focus on safety is inherent in everything we do and every decision we make,” said Dr. William F. Banholzer, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Dow. “We routinely share safety best practices with our competitors since we all understand improving safety is in everyone’s best interest. The same is true for university research. Our hope is that by broadly sharing what Dow does internally we can help improve university safety as well as our customers, national labs or anyone conducting materials research.”

Dow’s best practices focus on incident prevention and on spurring a high level of engagement in safety awareness. In 2012, thanks to a combination of smart work processes and procedures, and a focus on safe behaviors, 266 out of Dow’s 350 sites went completely injury-free.

“With its excellent safety record and well-known best safety practices, Dow is a reliable source for laboratory safety information,” said William Tolman, Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at University of Minnesota. “The Dow Lab Safety Academy presents material that is highly relevant to academic researchers, with modules that focus on the types of safety issues we all encounter. It is an excellent resource for students and those working in the chemical industry.”

As part of its laboratory safety initiative launched in early 2012, Dow has partnered with premier research universities to improve safety awareness and practices in the departments of chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering and materials. Through pilot programs with U.C. Santa Barbara (UCSB), University of Minnesota and Pennsylvania State University, Dow is working closely with graduate students and faculty to identify areas of improvement and help nurture a sustainable culture of laboratory safety.

LONDON, May 20, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE/Euronext Paris: CCE), which manufactures, bottles and markets Coca-Cola products in Western Europe, has begun a ground-breaking study with 20 households in Great Britain and France to observe at-home recycling behaviors. The study will seek to understand why recycling rates are so low, despite people expressing strong beliefs towards environmental behaviors.

Research shows that 75% of French and 76% of British consumers claim to “always” recycle plastic bottles at home, and over 63% across both countries view recycling as “a moral and environmental duty.” However, actual at-home recycling rates do not reflect these intentions with only half of all plastic bottles currently collected for recycling, revealing a significant ‘value/action gap.’ Improving these recycling rates will enable manufacturers to boost sources of locally-available high-quality recycled PET and reduce their resource footprint.

Supported by CCE’s Recycle for the Future campaign, researchers from the University of Exeter will observe ten households in both Great Britain and France over a six-month period to explore the dynamics that drive waste disposal and recycling in the home. Together with the participants, they will also explore solutions that could influence behaviors and eventually improve at-home recycling rates. Results will be shared with local authorities, NGOs and other businesses who are trying to influence environmental behaviors. CCE will collaboratively develop solutions with the wider industry and sustainability community to help improve recycling rates.

The study will explore questions such as:

Who are the environmental champions in the home? Preliminary quantitative research reveals a generation gap, with only 54% of 18-24 year olds across both countries saying they always recycle plastic bottles, compared to almost 90% of over-55s.

What is the impact of on-pack information? 37% of people in Great Britain say they would like to see more information on packaging about what can be recycled, yet 60% state they never check whether a pack is recyclable when they go shopping.

Is a lack of understanding in the infrastructure partly responsible for low recycling rates? Over 30% of people in both countries believe collected materials are not recycled.

“Our research team has been working on pro-environmental behavior change for many years, and we are very familiar with the ‘value/action gap,’” said Dr. Stewart Barr from the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter. “People say they want to be environmentally friendly and want to recycle, but in many cases, they don’t. This study will explore the intricacies of household decisions on recycling and identify actions that could drive long-term consumer behavior change.”

CCE has identified that packaging accounts for almost half of its carbon footprint. As part of its commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of its products by a third by 2020, the company has committed to recycle more packaging than it uses.

“Our commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the drink in your hand by a third by 2020 means we must inspire change in consumer recycling behavior,” said Joe Franses, director of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability. “Recycle for the Future will unlock the dynamics of household recycling behaviors and allow us to explore collaborative solutions to this challenge with the wider sustainability community. We believe this project will provide real value for other businesses, NGOs and public authorities.”

The study follows significant investment from CCE in two strategic infrastructure partnerships to increase plastics reprocessing capacity in Great Britain and France. The findings will be announced at CCE’s Sustainability Innovation Summit in October 2013.

Demand response (DR) programs, which aim to achieve stability on the grid by ensuring that demand does not exceed supply of electric power, have been offered to many electric customers in the United States for decades. In the last ten years, utilities and grid operators have adopted new technologies and practices to move demand resources to the next evolutionary phase, offering more advanced types of DR schemes. According to a new tracker report from Navigant Research, at least 1,342 DR programs are now underway worldwide – 95 percent of them in North America.

“Demand response continues to exhibit strong growth in North America, but it is also showing increasing adoption in other regions, particularly in Europe and Asia Pacific,” says senior research analyst Marianne Hedin. “A growing number of utilities and grid operators, in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Japan, and South Korea, have actively taken steps to implement or expand their DR offerings.”

DR falls into four market models, each addressing different objectives: capacity, economic programs, ancillary services, and energy trading. The capacity and economic market objectives account for the majority of the overall market, in terms of the number of programs. The energy-trading and ancillary services markets are very small, with a combined total of only 25 programs, accounting for less than 1 percent of overall DR, according to the report.

The report, “Demand Response Tracker 2Q13”, provides data on the different types of DR programs that address each of the four market models, such as direct load control, interruptible load, critical peak pricing, real-time pricing, time-of-use, ancillary services, and demand bidding or day-ahead bidding schemes. The report also covers programs focused on the major customer segments, including the commercial, industrial, agricultural, and residential sectors, and details the amount of load curtailment and the number of program participants, along with technology used and vendor partnerships whenever such information is available. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.

DETROIT, April 22, 2013 /3BL Media/ — General Motors is transforming corporate lands at its global facilities into tailored areas for wildlife habitats.

Together with the Wildlife Habitat Council, dozens of companies, including GM, are foregoing cement buildings for a different sort of structure: the kind that house animals.

“We strive to increase biodiversity around the world at our facilities, and we have 25 habitats certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council,” said Sue Kelsey, GM biodiversity program manager. “Within these sites, 16 percent of the land mass is actively managed as wildlife habitat.”

Turning unused land into a home for wildlife fits GM’s overall goal of getting the most out of its products, recycling or reusing more than 90 percent of the waste generated.

Some of these projects find homes at wildlife habitats, including scrap Chevrolet Volt battery covers that are turned into wood duck nests. At last count, GM has installed more than 400 of these structures at designated wildlife habitat areas surrounding GM facilities, giving employees a valuable tool in protecting animals.

“The habitats on our properties wouldn’t thrive without the help of our employees,” says Kelsey. “Their work exemplifies the deep respect and appreciation our company has for the nature that surrounds and interacts with our facilities.

GM also works with local schools, nongovernmental organizations, nonprofits and environmental preservation groups to enhance our habitats and increase community awareness about wildlife preservation.

KYOTO, Japan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As part of its traditional environmental protection and sustainability activities, Kyocera Corporation (NYSE:KYO)(TOKYO:6971) plants Green Curtains every spring at its sites in Japan and select Kyocera Group companies in other parts of the world. Through the hot summer, curtains of foliage are grown on trellises in front of office windows and walls at company sites. This not only provides shade but also shields the buildings from heat radiation — decreasing inside room temperatures by approximately 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit*, which contributes to a reduction of energy consumption from air conditioner usage.

Furthermore, Green Curtains not only reduce the creation of, but also absorb CO2 emissions: one square meter of foliage absorbs approximately 7.7 lbs of CO2 per year. In 2012, Green Curtains grown by Kyocera stretched a length of 2,723 ft and an area of 36,780 ft2 — equivalent to the area of 13 tennis courts — helping to meet regional energy saving targets in Japan stemming from nuclear power plant stoppage in the wake of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Since Kyocera first started growing Green Curtains at its Okaya Plant in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano in 2007, the company has expanded this activity to 28 sites in Japan and affiliates overseas including China, Thailand and Brazil. This year, Kyocera will also green its headquarters in Kyoto by growing morning glory vines outside the building and on the third-floor balcony.

On its Website about Green Curtain activities, Kyocera offers a comprehensive outline and explanation about this environmental initiative and encourages individuals and businesses to adopt the practice by publishing photos and illustrations which provide information on the necessary materials, and easily comprehensible instructions for making Green Curtains flourish at the workplace or at home. Furthermore, with the use of trellises, the foliage creates an attractive lush green and flowery decor on building facades, improving not only ecology, but also aesthetics.

Along with morning glory vines and goya, a traditional summer vegetable of the southern Okinawa Prefecture in Japan commonly known as bitter gourd, Kyocera cultivates cucumbers and peas as Green Curtains at its sites. After harvesting, these vegetables become delicious ingredients in special dishes served in employee cafeterias. Eating nutrient-rich bitter gourd helps to prevent fatigue in the hot summer season.

The initiative was launched by the town’s Member of Parliament, Rory Stewart, as part of a town celebration day on 11th May, 2013.

Wigton has a vision to trial and realise communal benefits from the possibilities of innovative technologies. The town was previously a pilot area for the introduction of rural broadband and through this initiative the community seeks to become empowered to take control of its energy needs. The initiative will introduce growing awareness, insight and control of energy costs through proactive adoption of smart metering, information displays, online portals and sharing of learning about benefits achieved. Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE: SSNI), a leading networking platform and solutions provider for smart energy networks, is committed to bringing benefits to UK consumers from its global experience in smart energy and has partnered with the town to showcase how communities can become empowered in their energy use.

The Wigton community and Silver Spring Networks have worked in collaboration within the town by engaging with people in their homes and town premises. Their work together has delivered an operational pilot with smart meters operating over a wireless communications network that gives consumers visibility of their energy use and information to help them control their costs. Through the information available from the smart meters, consumers in the town will be more able to make decisions related to energy efficiency, home investment and energy use of appliances. At the heart of the initiative is the sharing of insight and learning across the community using a display area in the Market Hall, websites and communal discussion.

Over time the pilot is expected to grow in the number of homes, businesses and council buildings and extend into showcasing the benefits to the town of renewable energy, energy controls, innovative heating solutions, insight about water use and electric vehicles. As the initiative expands it will show how a rural town such as Wigton can work together in partnership with innovative supporters such as Silver Spring Networks and their partners to become a showcase for innovation, realising communal benefits and creating local opportunity.

Wigton wishes to acknowledge the support from partners such as Innovia Films, a leading global producer of specialty high performance BOPP and Cellulose films for packaging and labels, Electricity North West, the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and EnergyAware, a global leader in consumer engagement and energy analytics. The initiative has demonstrated how communities and business can work together in the development of a secure, sustainable and affordable energy future.

Rory Stewart MP said, “This is a hugely significant event for Wigton: not only does it put Wigton on the map as a community willing to take practical steps to address fuel poverty, but is the beginning of many other potential benefits to both residents and businesses in the town. Our aim is to grow the pilot so that it will, eventually, cover more homes, businesses and public spaces, creating a true town-wide network. The long-term benefits to Wigton are huge: greater energy options, the means to control energy usage and reduce bills, explore innovative heating solutions, and even the use of electric vehicles. There will be no hidden costs in energy bills, and this initiative comes at no cost to any Wigton resident: it is all about people making energy savings through becoming more energy-aware, and we are extremely lucky to have secured such an exciting opportunity for the people of Wigton”.

Brian McGuigan of Silver Spring Networks who leads the initiative with the town said, “It has been a pleasure to work with the town and see their enthusiasm for the initiative. They have been engaged and interested in how they can take control of their energy future. It will be exciting to build on the early learnings and bring further benefits to the community”.

James Pace, Managing Director of Silver Spring Networks in the UK & Ireland said, “Silver Spring Networks is focused on empowering consumers and communities to take control of their energy costs through greater visibility and insights into energy consumption. We are proud to work in partnership with the town of Wigton and Rory Stewart, their Member of Parliament, to accelerate consumers starting to achieve control of their energy use and associated cost saving benefits as envisaged by the government from the forthcoming full smart metering roll-out. We look forward to our future work together to extend the initiative across the community, to trial the benefits for the town of new technologies, and to share the learning from Wigton with other communities”.

ERLANGEN, Germany–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Siemens Energy has recently opened a facility in Charlottesville, Virginia for the innovative commercial production of airfoil ceramic cores for gas turbine blades and vanes using the TOMOSM technology, initially developed by Mikro Systems, Inc. The advancements are expected to improve the cooling capability of gas turbine blading, thus enabling higher levels of engine performance and efficiency for future Siemens Gas Turbines. This technology is available to Siemens as a part of the Technology License agreement with Mikro Systems.

With support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Mikro Systems was funded via Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants. Mikro Systems and Siemens Energy partnered to develop the application of its patented Tomo-Lithographic Molding (TOMOSM) manufacturing technology to a range of gas turbine components.

“Through our licensing agreement with Mikro Systems, we are developing for commercial application the TOMOSM technology that is good for the environment as well as for our customers’ budgets,” said Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Energy, Inc. and CEO of the Energy Service Division. “It provides us with a game changing enabling technology to further boost our current world record for combined cycle efficiency of almost 61 percent to even higher levels.” Through retrofitting, the new technology can also be applied for improving the efficiency of power plants already in operation.

“Over the past few years, we’ve begun developing advanced components based on our TOMOSM technology. Through our successful collaboration with Siemens, our technology will be responsible for tremendous progress in blade manufacturing,” states Mike Appleby, CEO and founder of Mikro Systems.

“Fundamentally, this manufacturing technology opens the airfoil design space in ways thought unfeasible only a few years ago,” said Thierry Toupin, CEO of the Products Business Unit of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. “As such, it represents a critical tool in Siemens’ clean energy product development efforts.”

Gas turbines, which are used to produce power for industrial, utility, and aerospace applications, consist sequentially of compressor, combustor, and turbine sections. Incoming air is compressed to a high pressure state in the compressor section, and heated to high temperature via the combustion of fuel in the combustor section. The high-temperature, high-pressure gas is then expanded through a series of rotor-mounted airfoils in the turbine section, converting the gas’ energy into mechanical work. Therefore, improved airfoil designs which can tolerate higher gas temperatures and use less cooling air, result in the highest level of efficiency in natural gas turbine energy production.

BOULDER, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–China is in the midst of its latest national development strategy, better known as the 12th Five-Year Guideline, which will continue through 2015. One of the Guideline’s primary goals is “strengthening the construction of [the] smart grid.” With the support of the government-owned State Grid Corporation of China, as well as many provinces and cities, this effort is rapidly progressing. According to a recent report from Navigant Research, annual revenue from smart grid deployments in China will reach $15.4 billion by 2020.

“The area of strongest smart grid growth in China will be transmission upgrades, anticipated to reach more than $72 billion in revenue by 2020 on a cumulative basis,” says Bob Lockhart, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Overall, smart grid development in China will generate $127 billion in cumulative revenue from 2012 to 2020.”

One primary objective of smart grid planners in China, according to the report, is to help address the country’s imbalanced energy supply. Coal remains the primary source of power generation, and 76 percent of China’s coal resources are located in Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, and other northern and western regions. However, the country’s energy consumption needs are mainly concentrated in the more industrialized economies in the eastern and southern regions.

The report, “Smart Grid in China”, provides a comprehensive analysis of the relevant issues of China’s smart grid deployment program. The report includes a detailed analysis of the market drivers, business models and technology issues for smart grid development in China. Profiles are provided for more than 40 key industry players, classified by different industries, along with forecasts for smart grid revenue and smart meter shipments through 2020. What if the products you give (or enjoy) this Mother’s Day could also celebrate moms around the world?

This year World Fair Trade Day falls on the same weekend as Mother’s Day (May 12th), highlighting a natural connection between the two holidays and the opportunity to focus on the positive impact that Fair Trade has on the lives of so many mothers around the world. When you buy Fair Trade products, you are helping ensure that women can build a brighter future for their families and become leaders in their communities. That’s why our theme for Mother’s Day this year is Moms Make a World of Difference.

So how can you celebrate moms around the world this Mother’s Day? Here are 6 simple ways to support them:

1. BUY (OR ASK) FOR FAIR TRADE

Fair Trade is a market-based approach to fighting poverty. That means that it only works when you actually buy the stuff. So make put your dollars to work by buying or asking your loved ones for Fair Trade this Mother’s Day!

From chocolate, coffee, spices, clothing, to body scrubs, you’ll know that your gifts were made with respect for the people who grow and sew the products you love. Can you make a commitment to purchase at least one Fair Trade Certified gift when you shop for mom this year?

Check out our Mother’s Day coupon page for some great discounts on gifts (for you and for mom).

2. GIVE (OR REQUEST) FAIR TRADE ROSES

Gather Fair Trade florals into a bunch of love for the mom in your life. When you purchase Fair Trade Certified roses, you provide maternity leave, a pesticide-free environment, and job security for hundreds of women flower in Ecuador. Here are a few easy ways to purchase your Fair Trade Certified flowers for mom:

In store at: Whole Foods Market, New Seasons Market, and Bristol Farms

3. SHARE A FAIR TRADE VIDEO

Educate your friends and family about the strong moms of Fair Trade by sharing a video. This year we have a heartwarming video of Fair Trade moms in Guatemala wishing mothers around the world Happy Mother’s Day! You can watch it here.

Be sure to visit the Fair Trade Certified YouTube page to find even more educational videos.

4. PLAN A FAIR TRADE BRUNCH

Start mom’s day off right by treating her (or yourself!) to a leisurely Fair Trade breakfast in bed. There’s nothing better than waking up to the smell of Fair Trade Certified coffee and tea. You can also surprise mom with a special homemade treat.

While growing in terms of megawatts and systems shipped, the market for stationary fuel cells is also going through a period of deep restructuring, with a number of companies exiting the space and a handful of new entrants appearing. Over the last year, the sector has seen a sharp increase in market demand created by government policy initiatives. According to a recent report from Navigant Research, annual revenue from stationary fuel cells will grow from $1.7 billion in 2013 to $9 billion in 2022.

“Stationary fuel cells are still in the early part of the adoption cycle, with limited availability and affordability,” says Kerry-Ann Adamson, research director with Navigant Research. “During the last year, however, companies have moved to create products for markets where real needs exist—in many cases producing systems that use locally available fuels, can be maintained by local engineers, and do not require very limited operating temperature ranges. This growing realism will enable the industry to create a secure foundation for future growth.”

One key factor driving growth in the stationary fuel cell sector is falling costs, according to the report. Through a combination of re-engineering systems and high-volume, high-quality manufacturing, some leading companies have achieved up to 60 percent cost reductions over the last decade. Nevertheless, stationary fuel cell costs, particularly for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, are still very high compared to many incumbent technologies.

The report, “Stationary Fuel Cells”, provides a comprehensive analysis of developments and market opportunities in the global fuel cell industry, including a focus on the combined heat and power, prime power, and backup power/uninterruptible power supplies application segments. The study includes two market forecasts for unit shipments, megawatt shipments, and revenue under constrained and unconstrained growth scenarios, segmented by world region and application segment. The report also profiles 24 active fuel cell system companies in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.

The Smart Energy sector is evolving rapidly, expanding from a collection of niche markets into a standardized part of the global energy portfolio. In the same fashion that the Internet has produced a democratization of information and knowledge, the availability of small, distributed generation technologies, such as solar panels, small wind turbines, and residential combined heat and power systems, enables people to produce, and even sell, their own power. As a result, a range of new energy sources and advanced energy technologies has entered the market and started to post revenue. According to a new white paper from Navigant Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the transition to a more diversified and decentralized mix of energy sources will be one of the key trends for the global energy industry in 2013.

“This will be a key year in the evolution of the Smart Energy paradigm – a period when the rules of the game are debated, the roles of the incumbents challenged, and the foundation for the transition towards a more decentralized, democratic energy system is put into place,” says Kerry-Ann Adamson, research director with Navigant Research. “As with any transition of this magnitude, it will take decades to complete, but 2013 will be a cornerstone year in this transformation.”

The white paper identifies five emerging metatrends that will have an increasing impact in 2013 and beyond. These include:

Energy is becoming increasingly democratized

The role of government innovation funds is changing

Technologies are converging

The Southern African Power Pool is becoming the new BRIC

The role of utilities is changing

The white paper, “Smart Energy: Five Metatrends to Watch in 2013 and Beyond”, outlines key trends affecting the development of Smart Energy industries worldwide, the specific market impacts of these trends in 2013, and the longer-term impact of these emerging developments. Analysis and conclusions in this paper are drawn from Navigant Research’s ongoing Smart Energy research coverage, with forecasts included for key market sectors. The full white paper is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Agriculture Energy Coalition today expressed support for legislation introduced by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) to reauthorize Farm Bill Energy Title programs and provide robust mandatory funding. The Coalition also thanked Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), William Cowan (D-Mass.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) and other original co-sponsors of the legislation, which would provide more than $1 billion in mandatory funding for renewable energy programs.

Last week, the Agriculture Energy Coalition joined more than 100 national, state and regional organizations in a letter to the leaders of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, urging them to adopt a new Farm Bill with robust mandatory funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency programs. The letter noted, “Continued growth in new agriculture, manufacturing, and high tech jobs are at great risk without continued Federal investment.”

Lloyd Ritter, co-director of the Coalition, said, “We agree with Sen. Franken and other co-sponsors of this legislation that investments in energy efficiency projects and renewable energy systems in rural areas of the United States provide very significant energy security, economic, and environmental benefits to the entire United States, including stable, well-paying employment opportunities. The U.S. agricultural and forestry sectors offer significant potential for production of renewable energy and its economic and environmental benefits.”

The AgEC is a broad membership-based consortium of organizations and companies representing a broad spectrum of clean, renewable energy, energy efficiency and bioproducts stakeholders. It includes members focused on feedstock production and conversion technologies, rural economic development and diversification, biofuels, products and power, and renewable electricity production, environmental quality, and others. Coalition members are committed to seeing a strong bi-partisan energy title in the 2012 farm bill that builds on the tremendous clean energy accomplishments USDA has already realized and provides resources to USDA at a level that enables them to continue and expand this important mission.

Industrial energy management systems (IEMSs) are evolving quickly to help industrial facilities minimize energy use and waste while still meeting the demands of production. Technology, processing capabilities, software applications, and business intelligence insights are progressing quickly in the IEMS market, as vendors apply the latest innovations and advancements from other markets and application areas to the industrial sector. According to a new report from Navigant Research, annual revenue from IEMSs will reach $22.5 billion in 2020, essentially doubling their 2013 level.

“The IEMS market is opening to new firms, new technologies, and unique products and services,” says Eric Woods, research director with Navigant Research. “This is good news for both clients and vendors as fresh ideas make IEMSs more accessible. It is, however, not easy to access the IEMS market, and partnering with more established players is a necessary component of any successful entry by a company or solution.”

With their global presence, extensive domain expertise, and established infrastructure to support long-term engagements, large original equipment manufacturers have long been the leaders in this market. However, the market is changing rapidly, according to the report. Major IT companies with expertise in handling large data sets and sophisticated real-time business analytics applications are making inroads, as are smaller players.

The report, “Industrial Energy Management Systems”, examines the worldwide market for industrial energy management systems, including initial services, software installation and operation, and ongoing services. Market drivers and hurdles are examined in detail, along with global supply-side and demand-side market trends. Software functionality and service-related components are also detailed, and the report provides profiles of key industry players, including newer entrants that may shape the future direction of the market. Revenue forecasts, broken down by market segment and by region, extend through 2020. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Joule today announced another industry first in renewable fuel production: the direct conversion of waste CO2 into the essential components of gasoline and jet fuel. The breakthrough gives Joule the opportunity to expand its Sunflow™ product line and help address global demand for true hydrocarbon fuel replacements. In addition, the process uses waste CO2 as a feedstock, allowing industrial emitters to produce valuable fuels rather than discard emissions or employ costly measures for capture and sequestration.

To date, renewable hydrocarbon-based fuel substitutes have required the complex, multi-step conversion of algal or other agricultural biomass feedstocks into fuel pre-cursors, and subsequent chemical upgrading. In contrast, Joule has engineered photosynthetic biocatalysts that convert waste CO2 into hydrocarbons through a patented, continuous process. Joule has been successfully scaling its process for making ethanol (Sunflow-E) while also developing long-chain hydrocarbons for diesel (Sunflow-D). With its latest breakthrough, Joule becomes the first company able to directly produce medium-chain hydrocarbons which are substantial components of gasoline (Sunflow-G) and jet fuel (Sunflow-J).

“Though many technological paths are being pursued to help supplant fossil fuels, the majority have followed the same direction – beginning with biomass feedstocks and facing the well-known challenges of cost and scale along the way. Joule’s solar technology is bypassing these challenges while converting a waste stream into cost-competitive hydrocarbon fuels, which will have far greater and faster impact than low-percentage blendstocks or transportation alternatives that require major infrastructure overhaul,” said William J. Sims, President and CEO of Joule. “Today’s news marks another significant accomplishment in this regard, enabling production of renewable fuels that can supplant meaningful amounts – not small fractions – of fossil-derived gasoline and jet fuel.”

Joule’s hydrocarbon fuels have the additional benefit of being inherently sulfur-free. For the diesel and gasoline markets, this gives refiners the ability to meet sulfur content requirements without raising production costs or fuel prices. As just announced on March 29, 2013, the US Environmental Protection Agency is seeking to further reduce the sulfur content of gasoline by more than 60% beginning in 2017, requiring significant capital cost of $10 billion and additional annual operating cost of $2.4 billion for refiners, according to the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM). Instead, Joule Sunflow-G would seamlessly cut sulfur content by comprising a substantial portion of the final product.

Joule is now commercializing its first product, Sunflow-E, for global availability in early 2015. Construction of the company’s first commercial plants is planned to begin in 2014 in multiple locations worldwide, requiring only adequate sunlight, access to waste CO2 and non-potable water.

Mr. Sims will present Joule’s latest developments at the Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference, taking place today through Wednesday in Washington DC. Additional information about the conference is available at http://www.advancedbiofuelssummit.com.

About Joule

Joule capitalizes on the global abundance of waste CO2 to economically produce renewable fuels and chemicals. The company’s Sunflow™ products drop into conventional fuel blendstock in high percentages, displacing more oil than biofuels and allowing seamless adoption. Manufactured without feedstock constraints or complex processing, Sunflow fuels achieve high volumes and low costs with no dependence on subsidies or precious natural resources. Through its subsidiaries, Joule Unlimited Technologies and Joule Fuels, the company advances both technology development and commercial deployment to achieve market impact as soon as 2015. Joule is privately held and has operations in Bedford, Massachusetts; Hobbs, New Mexico; and The Hague, Netherlands.
