Kraft Foods Sizes Up the Environmental Impacts of Its Products Through Lifecycle Assessment

NORTHFIELD, Ill., May 7, 2012 / 3BL Media / PRNewswire/ – Most people have heard the saying that you can’t improve what you can’t measure.  But measurement can be complex and time-consuming, especially when it comes to figuring out how to reduce environmental impacts.  Which is why Kraft Foods is using lifecycle assessment (LCA) to help it make the right changes and get the best results.  LCA measures the footprint of what goes into making a product, from farm to fork and beyond.

“Lifecycle assessment is an important part of our sustainability journey,” said Roger Zellner, Sustainability Director for Research, Development & Quality.  “It gives us a competitive advantage, as we now have more insight into how to reduce our products’ footprints, find efficiencies and validate and explain those benefits to customers and consumers.  Together, we’re focusing and working smarter and communicating better, which is good for the environment, people and our business.”

This LCA work builds on the multi-year footprinting project Kraft Foods recently used to map its impact on climate change, land and water use.  Today, employees around the world are using lifecycle thinking to help uncover ways to eliminate waste in manufacturing.  This can reduce the amount of raw materials, such as agricultural commodities, used at the beginning of the supply chain.  LCA also can help measure how product and packaging innovations improve on previous designs, and provide a common system to measure and explain those benefits. SPI Solar to Build 6.4 Megawatts of Solar Developments at Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon, New Jersey

ROSEVILLE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–SPI Solar (“SPI”) (OTCBB:SOPW) a leading vertically integrated photovoltaic (“PV”) solar developer, today announced that it has entered into an engineering, procurement and construction (“EPC”) agreement with a subsidiary of KDC Solar (“KDC Solar”) to design and build multiple solar energy facilities (“SEF”) for KDC Solar at the Mountain Creek Resort and Grand Cascades Golf Resort in Vernon, New Jersey. KDC Solar will own and operate the SEFs. The SEFs being developed at the resorts will include a mixture of fixed ground mount and custom designed solar parking canopies and car ports located at three separate sites at the resort. The three SEFs will provide more than 8,000,000 kW hours of solar electricity generation per year to help power the resort’s operations. The project is yet another large-scale solar installation for SPI as a result of its preferred provider agreement with KDC Solar.

“We are extremely pleased that it will be Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs and that our finished work will be seen by the thousands of visitors the resorts draw from the tri-state area. We look forward to getting started.”

Annual Smart Grid Spending to Reach $65 Billion by 2017

LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Annual global spending on smart grid technologies, including smart meter implementations, as well as upgrades to transmission and distribution infrastructure, is expected to reach $65 billion by 2017.

Much of the electricity infrastructure in operation today is antiquated, highly inefficient, and cannot reliably manage the loads of today and tomorrow without significant upgrades taking place. With climate change high on the political agenda and utilities keen to increase operational efficiencies, there is an obvious and pressing need for a complete overhaul of all aspects of the grid in order to make it smarter. To this end, work has begun on ensuring that the smart grid will soon become a reality with large-scale smart metering deployments, which are the most visible example of these efforts.

“This involves the installation of a plethora of sensors, controls, and other grid optimization solutions such as synchrophasors and advanced reclosers.” Continue reading

Koch Brothers front group Heartland Institute Ends Experiment with ‘Unabomber’ Global Warming Billboard

It is sometimes difficult to explain to people that live outside the United States why the question of ‘Global Warming’ is still being debated there.  The fact that the earth is warming is pretty obvious for anyone with the ability to count. However, for anyone that has been exposed to more than a couple hours of US television, welcome to the twilight zone.  Pro fossil-fuel organizations spend hundreds of millions of dollars on TV ads which distort energy issue beyond recognition.

On American TV coal is clean, natural gas doesn’t have any environmental side effects at all and domestic fossil fuel production is the ONLY path to future prosperity.  The scientists at the big oil companies are also nature’s very best friends.  It is a wonderful and harmonious world.

One of the organizations at the forefront of this culture of disinformation is the Heartland Institute.  In short, they are an organization that corporations go to, pay money and in exchange they get a bogus ‘scientific’ report that say basically whatever they want it to say.  This report will then be touted as something ‘scientific’ and pumped out to the media.  Propaganda to order – Stalin would be impressed.  Major funders – Koch Industries.
