U.N. climate panel agrees to reforms (EcoSeed)

The United Nation panel of climate scientists agreed on Thursday to change its practices in response to errors in a 2007 report, and its chairman, Rajendra Pachauri of India, dismissed suggestions he should step down.

At an October 11 to October 14 meeting in Busan, South Korea, the 130-nation panel agreed to tighten fact-checking in reports that help guide the world’s climate and energy policies and to set up a “task force” to decide on wider reforms by mid-2011.

“Change and improvement are vital to the I.P.C.C.,” Mr. Pachauri told a telephone news conference by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former United States vice president Al Gore.

The I.P.C.C. has been under fire after errors in its last report in 2007, led by a projection that global warming could melt all Himalayan glaciers by 2035 – centuries before the worst-case thaw.

Britain's Top 10 Green Cities Announced

Newcastle been named as Britain’s greenest city for the second year running in a study examining quality of life and environmental awareness.  Moves to install electric vehicle charging points and its support of clean technology firms were highlighted by the Sustainable Cities Index. Newcastle came top of a league of 20 cities including Leicester, Brighton, Bristol and London.

Hull remains bottom of the league for the third year in the row.  Leicester has undergone a transformation from 14th place four years ago to second place in the 2010 league.  According to the index, the five top-placed cities have set themselves ambitious targets and have long-term visions of how to improve life for residents by reducing their environmental impact and creating new opportunities in the green economy.

Nottingham suffered the biggest fall in the table, dropping four places to 12th.  Hull came last for employment and was near the bottom for business start-ups.  Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, which runs the league, said: “Cities are having to count every penny so it’s essential that they invest wisely for long-term success.  ”Leaders like Newcastle and Leicester are developing plans to run services in smarter ways, tackle challenges like climate change and secure the jobs of the future.”

Barry Rowland, chief executive of Newcastle City Council, said: “Sustainability is right at the top of our agenda, and we intend to keep it there.”

Sustainability tip of the week: Having a better Halloween

Dressing up and celebrating Halloween can be fun — especially for kids. It’s easy to make it a healthy holiday for you and your family. Try these ideas:

– Create a low-impact costume. Rather than buying a new costume, get creative with items you already own or can get used at a local resale shop or from friends. Consider a costume swap at school or among friends.

– Some face paints contain lead, so pick play makeup wisely. Look for safe products and apply them carefully.

– Use pillow cases or cloth bags instead of paper bags for collecting candy.

– Offer treats that you would like your kids to receive and that use the least amount of packaging.

– Check the labels on Halloween-related items and buy ones that use recycled content.

– If you plan a Halloween party, buy or use reusable utensils, plates, napkins, and tablecloths, or buy disposable items that have recycled content.

– As you clean up after the holiday, don’t throw away your Halloween decorations. Use them again next year to save money as well as landfill space.

– Urge children to dispose of their candy wrappers in their bags or in trash cans rather than on the street.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are electric utility’s focus, Duke Energy CEO says

Customers want electricity that’s affordable. Industrialists want a reliable, year-round power source. Environmentalists want electricity produced from clean, renewable resources.

James Rogers, CEO of Duke Energies, says all three are his priorities. Rogers spoke Oct. 12 at Appalachian State University during the Walker College of Business’ Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture Series.

“Job one for me is providing affordable, reliable, clean electricity, 24-7, 365 days a year. It’s that simple,” he said. “But what is difficult is that I have to make tradeoffs with every decision about what type of power plant I build, what kind of investment I make. Our mission for the 21st century is to build a company predicated on the principles of sustainability. That is central as we go forward and make choices about the types of energy generation that we build in the future,” he said.

With an average plant life of 40 years, Rogers said that by 2050, Duke Energy’s entire fleet of generating plants will be replaced. “In a sense, our company has a blank sheet of paper on which to build,” Rogers said.

Duke Energy is constructing an 825-megawatt coal burning plant in Rutherford County that will replace a thousand megawatts of aging plants that produce significant sulfur dioxide and other pollutants and will reduce the company’s environmental foot print, Rogers said. A planned 630-megawatt plant in Indiana designed to burn coal cleaner will also replace an aging plant.

Two natural gas burning plants are planned in North Carolina, and Duke proposes building a nuclear power plant in South Carolina. “Nuclear technology is the only technology that provides energy around the clock and with zero greenhouse gas emissions,” Rogers said.

Wal-Mart plans to double locally grown produce sales

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., said it plans to double its sales of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables in the U.S. over the next five years as part of a broader effort to support sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Through its Heritage Agriculture program, Wal-Mart will scale up purchases of locally grown food in U.S. states and regions “with long histories of agriculture production,” the Bentonville, Ark.-based company said in a statement Oct. 14. Three of the largest Heritage Agriculture programs are in the Northeast, Midwest and Mississippi Delta region, the company said.

Examples of products Wal-Mart plans to purchase through the program include tomatoes, blueberries and broccoli in the Interstate 95 corridor of the Northeast, peaches, cucumbers and strawberries in the Delta and potatoes, onions and apples in the Midwest, the company said.

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, also said it planned to sell $1 billion worth of food from 1 million small and medium-sized farmers in emerging markets by the end of 2015, aiming to boost their incomes by up to 15%. The company will also provide training to farmers in crop selection and sustainable farming practices that produce more food with fewer resources and less waste.

Silverado enters U.S. solar arena with 400-MW project pipeline (ecoseed.org)

Silverado Power has unveiled plans to develop about 400 megawatts of utility-scale solar projects in an effort to penetrate the burgeoning solar market in the United States. The San Francisco-based company aims to establish low-transmission, utility-scale projects near the grid, which are expected o start operations within at least 18 months.

Silverado Power is a fruit of a joint venture between key industry veterans and Martifer Solar, a large European energy and infrastructure company. The company boasts of over 75 solar farms in the United States, all in various development stages. It also has 40 projects awaiting interconnection in southern California alone. However, Silverado Power pointed out that most large-scale solar projects were held up by various obstacles, including environmental issues and the lack of transmission infrastructure necessary to link major rural projects to large cities, which have greater demand for power.

“The solar industry has made great strides in the last five years but hasn’t addressed a fundamental problem – how to reduce the time-to-production for solar energy. The lack of transmission infrastructure has been one of the main contributors,” said John Cheney, chief executive of Silverado Power.

“We are confident that Silverado Power will play a crucial role in helping California utilities meet its energy needs through a distributed model that avoids this problem, satisfying environmental regulations and avoiding transmission issues that normally prevent power from reaching end-users,” he added.

E-15 biofuel can now be sold in the U.S. (ecoseed.org)

The United States Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday allowed all gas stations in the country to mix higher volumes of ethanol into gasoline they sell only for vehicles built no earlier than the 2007 model year only.

Lisa Jackson, the agency’s administrator, made the decision after a study released by the Department of Energy on the impact of a 15-percent ethanol mix on engine longevity and greenhouse gas emissions leaned on a favorable verdict. “Thorough testing has now shown that E-15 does not harm emissions control equipment in newer cars and light trucks,” said Ms. Jackson, citing the report.

According to the agency, the new rule is significant in the country’s drive to commercialize E-15 gasoline blends. With the decision, fuel with an ethanol mix of over 10 percent can now be sold for vehicles made during the 2007 model year and onwards. The waiver only applies for cars and light trucks, to gas pump products which hold up to 15 percent ethanol, technically known as E-15. To ease the transition, the agency is proposing measures to help fuel consumers identify the appropriate fuel for their vehicles and equipment. Fuel pumps which contain E-15 gasoline will be so designated.
