Stationary Fuel Cell Market Will Reach $9 Billion in Annual Revenue by 2022

Stationary-Fuel-CellsWhile growing in terms of megawatts and systems shipped, the market for stationary fuel cells is also going through a period of deep restructuring, with a number of companies exiting the space and a handful of new entrants appearing.  Over the last year, the sector has seen a sharp increase in market demand created by government policy initiatives.  According to a recent report from Navigant Research, annual revenue from stationary fuel cells will grow from $1.7 billion in 2013 to $9 billion in 2022.

“Stationary fuel cells are still in the early part of the adoption cycle, with limited availability and affordability,” says Kerry-Ann Adamson, research director with Navigant Research.  “During the last year, however, companies have moved to create products for markets where real needs exist—in many cases producing systems that use locally available fuels, can be maintained by local engineers, and do not require very limited operating temperature ranges.  This growing realism will enable the industry to create a secure foundation for future growth.” Continue reading

Hydrogen Fuel Cells Will Be a Modest $3 Billion Market in 2030

US-beefs-up-fuel-cell-research-and-development-with-74-million_295x220BOSTON–()–The dream of a hydrogen economy envisioned for decades by politicians, economists, and environmentalists is no nearer, with hydrogen fuel cells turning a modest $3 billion market of about 5.9 GW in 2030, says Lux Research.

Although the cost of hydrogen impacts fuel cell market adoption, hydrogen fuel accounts for only 35% of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for stationary applications and 21% of the TCO for mobile applications, with fuel cell capital costs and membrane replacement costs making up most of the difference. Annual Fuel Cell System Shipments Will Surpass 600K by 2017

Fuel cells have an important role to play within the emerging smart energy paradigm.  They represent one of a wave of commercially available technologies that are resilient, distributed, and efficient.  Though the fuel cell industry has displayed some encouraging signs in the last three years, it still faces significant headwinds – including the high costs for fuel cell stacks compared those of incumbent technologies and a lack of customer awareness of the advantages of fuel cell technology.  Nevertheless, according to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, annual shipments of fuel cell systems will grow rapidly over the next 5 years, from less than 29,000 in 2012 to more than 600,000 in 2017.

The market value of the fuel cell industry, including all applications in the stationary, portable, and transport sectors, will reach $15.7 billion in 2017, the study concludes. Continue reading

Apple’s North Carolina Data Center to Use 100% Renewable Energy

“By the end of 2012, we’ll meet the energy needs of our Maiden, North Carolina, data center using entirely renewable sources. To achieve this, we’re building our own facilities that will provide over 60 percent of the clean power we need. It’s another example of Apple’s commitment to designing for energy efficiency — from the ground up.” Source: Apple.com

Generating onsite renewable energy

Apple’s data center in Maiden, North Carolina, will draw about 20 megawatts of power at full capacity. We’ll be producing an unprecedented 60 percent of this power onsite. To do that, we’re building what will be the nation’s largest private solar arrays and the largest non-utility fuel cell installation operating anywhere in the country. That’s a scale of onsite renewable energy production that no other company has matched. Onsite energy generation minimizes our dependence on the grid and reduces our environmental impact. And when our solar arrays and fuel cells are operating, Apple’s Maiden data center will be the most environmentally sound data center ever built.

Worldwide Revenue from Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Will Reach $785 Million in 2012

As the fuel cell industry makes the transition from the R&D stage to full commercialization, breakout applications are continuing to emerge and business models and market structures are evolving rapidly.  Overall, the industry continues to expand, and the total size of the global market – including revenues from fuel cells and from hydrogen for fuel cells and internal combustion engines (ICEs) – will reach $785 million in 2012, according to a new white paper from Pike Research.

One key market that is taking shape is the use of fuel cells for residential combined heat and power (resCHP) applications, a market that is experiencing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 67.7%.  Meanwhile, Pike Research expects that remote sensing will be the breakout market for small fuel cells in 2012, as they are well-suited for applications including dam monitoring, seismic monitoring, wildlife monitoring, weather stations, and others.  However, other sectors do not look so promising, according to Pike Research’s analysis – one example is the portable fuel cell market, particularly for consumer electronics applications, which the firm anticipates will suffer disappointment in 2012 after a recent renewal of the hype in this sector.  The white paper, which includes 10 predictions about the fuel cell market in 2012, is available for free download on Pike Research’s website.

“The fuel cell and hydrogen industries are once again entering a year of growth, as seen in the revenue projections for the first time surpassing three-quarters of a billion dollars, but market participants also face significant challenges,” says research director Kerry-Ann Adamson.  “As well as growth in the current markets, we are also starting to see new markets emerging – including, in 2012, the remote sensing sector, with increasing demand for fit-for-purpose products from the fuel cell industry.” Continue reading

Price Reductions Leading to Accelerating Adoption of Fuel Cells

In 2009, Japan began offering commercial solutions for residential combined heat and power (resCHP) fuel cells with its ENE-FARM project.  Korea has followed suit with hundreds of test trials for its Residential CHPs Monitoring Project.  Meanwhile, China has been driving research and innovation in fuel cell technology through government, academic, and enterprise initiatives, focusing, for the most part, on fuel cell transportation.  Although their programs are primarily aimed at meeting increased demand for residential energy and complying with national policies for a greener society, providers in these countries also hope to become the global leaders in this arena – both in terms of technology development and price.  According to a recent report from Pike Research, prices for fuel cell-based systems, across a range of applications, are expected to decline significantly in the next few years, removing a critical barrier to adoption.

The cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts that the market for fuel cells in Asia Pacific will reach $6.7 billion by 2017, up from just $52.8 million in 2011. Continue reading
