Top 20 Greenest US and Canadian Cities

U.S. and Canada Green City Index analyzes the environmental sustainability of 27 major metropolitan areas in both countries

San Francisco grabbed the mantle of “greenest” major city in the U.S. and Canada Green City Index, with New York, Seattle,Denver and Boston rounding out the top five U.S. cities.  The unique study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), and commissioned by Siemens, assesses and compares 27 major U.S. and Canadian cities on environmental performance and policies across nine categories – CO2 emissions, energy, land use, buildings, transport, water, waste, air quality and environmental governance.

“The Green Cities Index demonstrates that America’s cities are the driving force behind the nation’s sustainability efforts,” saidEric Spiegel, president and CEO, Siemens Corp.  ”Despite the fact that we do not have a federal climate policy in the United States — and no federal carbon standard — 21 of the 27 cities in the index have already set their own carbon reduction targets.  Cities are creating comprehensive sustainability plans, utilizing current technology and proving everyday that we don’t have to wait to create a more Continue reading

Solar Breakthrough – Colloidal Quantum Dots (CQD)

In a paper published in Nature Photonics, U of T Engineering researchers report a new solar cell that may pave the way to inexpensive coatings that efficiently convert the sun’s rays to electricity.

The U of T researchers, led by Professor Ted Sargent, report the first efficient tandem solar cell based on colloidal quantum dots (CQD). “The U of T device is a stack of two light-absorbing layers – one tuned to capture the sun’s visible rays, the other engineered to harvest the half of the sun’s power that lies in the infrared,” said lead author Dr. Xihua Wang.

“We needed a breakthrough in architecting the interface between the visible and infrared junction,” said Sargent, a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, who is also the Canada Research Chair in Nanotechnology. “The team engineered a cascade – really a waterfall – of nanometers-thick materials to shuttle electrons between the visible and infrared layers.” Continue reading

Sustainability – A New Engine of Innovation for Healthcare?

In the healthcare industry, the R&D lab is the traditional engine of innovation yet a new report issued by OgilvyEarth and Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide reveals that companies investing in sustainability initiatives are helping drive innovative business opportunities in new ways.  The report, “Healthcare Marketing in the Age of Sustainability,” offers an overview of the relationship between healthcare and sustainability today, as well as insight on the future direction of these efforts.  In a year when 10 drugs contributing to $50 billion in sales will face patent expiration, the report offers a perspective on potential new avenues of innovation.

While it is unlikely that revenue growth will be completely decoupled from the lab in the near term, there is a quantifiable bottom line opportunity to pursue greener, more social products and business strategies. The report finds that long-term industry success will be realized by companies that are able to link their success to solving the world’s most intractable health and environmental problems. Healthcare companies that are investing in sustainability initiatives ahead of the curve see that their own sustainability initiatives are helping them achieve competitive advantages.
