Nature’s Bounty: 5 Natural Ways to Enhance Your Diet
By Kara Masterson
There has been a huge focus lately on clean eating. Organic foods are in while highly processed or sugar-laden foods are out. However, even if you think that you have been eating well, you may still be missing some vital nutrients in your diet. Without all of the essential vitamins and minerals, your body may be more prone to sickness and disease. Check out these five ways to ensure that you are getting well-rounded nutrition from your diet.
Eat Whole Foods
A whole food is a plant-based food that has not been processed or refined. Some examples would include fresh fruits and vegetables as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts. These foods retain their basic nutrients as well as their fiber. Search for whole foods that are also organic because these will not have been treated with pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals.
Eat the Rainbow
If you already eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, you may still be missing some nutrients if you are not eating a wide array of these healthy foods. Choose options that mirror every color of the rainbow because the colors are formed from certain nutrients and antioxidants within the plant itself. For example, look for red peppers, orange sweet potatoes, yellow pineapple, green spinach, blueberries and purple plums.
Choose Foods in Peak Season
Foods that are picked in their peak season will taste the best naturally and will also have the most nutrients in them. These foods have not been sitting in warehouses for weeks or even months and will not require additional sugar to make them taste good. One good way to follow this tip is to eat mostly locally produced crops.
Cook for Yourself
When you eat out, there is no telling what has been mixed into your foods. When you cook for yourself, you will know exactly what you are adding to your food and will be able to choose your ingredients with care. Even if you do not feel that you are very good at cooking, you can take advantage of one of the many home cooking mail order programs that send you the fresh ingredients you will need every week.
Choose All-Natural Supplements
There may be some type of food that you just cannot eat or stomach. This could be causing you to miss out on vital nutrients. Check with your doctor to see if you should supplement with an all-natural supplement like AlgaeCal or something similar.
When eating a wide array of clean, whole foods, it is easy to get all of the nutrition that your body needs because your body was made for that. However, when you choose processed foods, many of the vitamins and minerals have been removed, and unhealthy ingredients, such as sugar and corn syrup, have been added. The next time you go shopping, try shopping the outer perimeter of your store, which is where the healthiest foods are stocked. If you feel that you are still not getting the nutrients that you need, add in an all-natural supplement to make up the difference.
